The Daily Sentinel of Winston says: "The Baptist Sunday Schools of Winston have appointed commit tees to make the necessary arrange ments for the t n tertainment of the First Baptist Sunday School of Hal eigh, which will arrive here on the 8th inst." Manteo Lodge No. 8, t O. O. F., will hold its regular session tonight at 8 o'clock and will confer the first degree. Candidates for this degree will please be present at 8:80 o'clock. We are informed by Mr. Joseph E. Pogue, that he has arranged to turn out double the amount of his cele brated brands of tobacco, over his business during the last year. We are pleased to learn that Mr. Pogue's manufactory is fast gaining a wide spread reputation and that his brands are becoming famous in the market. The "Strivers for the Crown" Circle, of KirgB' Daughters will hold a 'JNeck Tie Party,' for the benefit of Saint John's Hospital, on Thursday evening next at the store formerly occupied by the North State Music Co. The party will be opened at 6 o'clock in the afternoon for children. Baker for June. According to Prof. J. C. Baker for the Southern States, for June 181)1, the indications are as follows : 1 fair and hot, 2 hot with thunder, 4 and 5 rainy, thunder and warmer, 6 and 7 rain and thunder, 8, 9 nd 10 light rains and thunder, 11 fair, 13 and 14 hot weather and thunder, 15 and 16 hard Mtinsand thunder storm, 17 partly cloudy and warm, 18 and 22 rainy weather and thunder, 23 and 21 nearly fair and warm, 25 rains and thunder, 2A and 27 fair and hot, 28 rain, 29 fair, 30 rain. On the 1 to 3of fuly we may look for another storm. U. 8. Circuit Court. The case of the United States vs John T. McLoud, Harnett county, in dicted for illicit distilling, was taken u p this morning. The case was given to the jury but no verdict had been rendered when our report closed. Mr W. B. Mann, of Raleigh, is foreman of the grand jury. Closing Exercises. On Friday next, the closirg exer cises of Messrs. Morson & Denson's school will take place, and will be very interesting. Mr. W. S. Prim rose, President of the Board of Direc tors of the a. & M. College, will de liver the address. We are glad to learn that the past session has been one of the most prosperous in the his tory of j the school, the average en rollment being one .hundred and t wenty, and the average attendance being over one hundred. Catalogue of the Universily of North Carolina Shows an excellent intellectual bill of fare offered to the young men of the country. The University is well equipped in books and apparatus for instruction, and has a full corps of professors. The Law school and the Medical school are flourishing There were 197 matriculates. We note that President Battle has resign ed in order to accept the chair of Hist or v, recently established. His successor is shortly to be re-elected Prof. Holmes' department is also to be provided for as he has accepted the office of State Geologist. Marriage Licenses. On Friday night next, the beautiful play of Esmeralda will be presented at Metropolitan ball by the amateures of this city, for the benefit of St. John's Hospital. These amateures are some of the best known of our people. Each character will be beautifully and artistically presented and we pre dict a great dramatic success. The little child that was abandoned by its inhuman mother a short time since, died this morning at the resi dence of Mr. John Beasley, who re sides at No. 809, east Cabarrus street , aged two months. Mr. Beasley and his most estimable wife took charge of the little one and carefully attended to it, ministering to its wants iu every manner that they could before it died. They named the child "Minnie." It is indeed a sad case, but do doubt the child is better off. We can but think that a just retri bution will yet overtake those who flagrantly violated the laws of GOD and man. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning from the residence of Mr. Beasley. Special Sale lor Next Friday. There upon her irate sire charged her with "perjury" in falsely swearing to her age, at'd got out requsition papers for her arrest and return to Kentucky. Gov. Hovey, who had not forgotten the day of his youth, declined to honor the requisition because he did not think the old man should try to make a felon out of his daughter simply because she thought she could be happier with that young fellow than with him, and did what under the circumstances it was perfectly natural she should do.
