A portrait of Col. Wm. Johnston, of
Mecklenburg county, was hung in
the State Library yesterday. It is a
fitting tribute to one of North Caroli

We hope the Board of Aldermen at
their meeting next Friday night, will
hurry up the matter of an auditori
um. Next to the street cars it is the
most important subject now occupy
ing the attention of our people.
He sure and attend the Neck 'lie
party. It is for the benetit oi oui
Hospital.
Tbenew electric cars at Charlotte
are named Vance, Jaryis, Albeit arte
and Swanannoa. Ah the street car
system is purely a city business, we
propose to name ours (when we get
them,) Alf. Thompson, Tom Badger

The remains of the late James E.

people. A band of music playing
solemn dirges headed the procession.
The Merchants and Farmers Bank

of the finest bakeries to be found iu

by all who are judges of good bread,
cakes &c, that they cannot be sur
passed at any establishment of the
kind in the country. They use the
best material and produce the best of
everything in their line. We advise
the ladies especially to give them a

Much interest centers in the case of
the board of canvassers of Cafe Fear

We are requested to state that the
books for listing taxes were opened
today in the grand jury room on the
left hand side, first floor of the court
house. It is earnestly desired that
our people will not delay the matter
to the last, as in that case, there is
always a considerable rush.. The law
allows the first twenty days in June
in which to list, and any extension
beyond that time is for the matter of
convenience.
Let there be a prompt response.

Pic-nic.
The pic nic at Auburn yesterday
by the Central M. E. Sunday School
was one full of enjoyment and from
first to last a success. The children
were carried away. The.train left the
Union Depot about 5:50 carrying over
200 young and old, large and small.
In a very short while we were at
Auburn and the grounds, where we
found everything in apple pie order.
Pond with boats, grove with seats
and swir.gs, spring cold and nice
with the old gourd, out of which
water is always better. We were met
by the Messrs. Watts and Thos.
Johns, Etq., who deserve special men
tion and have the thanks of the Sun
day School not only for their efforts,
but for their success in making us
happy. We only regret that .iore of
the little ones could not participate
with us.
After dinner, when everybody waB
in the best of humor and wore a
smile, at the request of Mr. Kelly,
Auburn's Photographer, the school
were arranged on the bank, while
others were in boats, and then the
