Thb departure of Mr. Blaine for Bar Harbor, Maine, is (seriously critU cised. oome think it means an mi tial step to retiring from public life, while others contend it is for the pur pose of temporary relaxation. It is generally conceded, however, that Mr. Blaine is worked down and is a mere wreck of his former self, so far as his physical condition is concerned. It is stated that President Harri son will receive our committee of in vitation on the 10th inst., and then we may perhaps know whether he will grace our exposition with his presence. We have, of late years, been so disappointed in the matter of distinguished visitors that we do not take much stock in the Presidents' coming. We hope, however, he will Bay right down yes or no. This thing of leaving the matter in doubt to the very last moment is a serious drawback. If we are to have the President with us, we want to know it, bo that we may make ready to give him such a reception as the dig niry of his office demands. -HSU'S 'iHitt'1 Without Hands. Chicago Herald. LittleMary an Marcena is the daugh ter of a tinsmith who lives at Saucel ito, Cal. She has seven brothers and Bisters, ..has this strange little girl Four brothers and three sisters; so Bhe is never lonely. The other chil dren go to school, but there is always a baby to keep her company. She never goes to school herself, though she is nearly eight years old. J There are a good many reasons why she stays at home from school. She could not hold her books, and she hates to think she cannot do everything quite as well as anybody else. For the poor little thing has no arms. She has never had any. The thing that Maryan most de lights in doing is to help her little brothers and sisters get ready for school. She is very quick and full of life, and she hurries around at a great rate. She makes them hurry too. She washes their faces and combs their hair, and if they don't stand still she knows exactly how to give them a lively little box on the ear. How does she do it? Why, with her feet, of course. She laughs when people are astonished at that. Maryan does not believe that hands are one bit more useful or conven lent than feet. Any one who notices her for a while is usually a con vert to her way of thinking too. She just takes hold of a towel be tween her toes and she throws it around her little brother's neck by a dexterous twist of her supple ankle Then the dips her foot in the water, and she rubs that youngster's face till it shines again. Then she sits back and looks at that round, little red face, just exactly as an artist looks at his picture to see if he has achieved the correct effect. When the face is as new looking and fresh as a brand new tin pan, Maryan gives a queer little satisfied sigh, and pat ters into the next room as fast as she can-that's pretty fast, too, by the way. When she comes out she has (something between her two first toes. That something i , a comb. She hops up to her brother and then she sits down. f wish! swish! goes the comb thro St. Louis Globe-Democrat. Ministers declare that in nine cases out of ten brides are much more self- possessed than are bridegrooms when the marriage ceremony is being per formed. A shy, modest looking little crea ture robed in white will stand per fectly erect, looking the minister calmy and squarely in the eyes with out for an instant losing her self poise, while the big, blunt six footer of a bridegroom by her side is pale and nervous and trembling. His fingers are likely to twitch nervously, and he may even hitch at his trouser legs or twist a corner of .his coat skirt. I was once '"best man" to a stal wart, middle aged bridegroom, noted for his courage and feats of daring, says a writer in the Philadelphia Call, and when the time came for us to go down stairs to meet the bride and her attendants, he nearly had a fit, and he looked like a walking corpse all through the ceremony. I had to keep saying, "Brace up, old boy," and "Come, come, you've got to go down," to get him started at all, and at the door he was idiotic enough to clutch at me and say: Say, Fred, how would it do to have Mary and the preacher slip in here and have it all over with before we go down at all ? I can't go through it before all that crowd." "Idiot," I said, briefly and pointed ly enough to leave no doubt as to my meaning. "Mary won't come in here and you will go down this instant." He got through at last without do ing or saying anything ridiculous, in which respect he was luckier than another stalwart bridegroom of my acquaintance, who was so dazed and overcome that he held out one of his own fingers for the ring when the minister said, "With this ring I thee wed." Another bridegroom I know lost his head to such a degree that when it came time for him to sav "I. Horace, take thee, Annie, to be my lawful wedded wife," he said, in an unnaturally loud tone, "I, Annie, take thee, Horace, to be my lawful wedded wife," and when the time came for him to introduce his bride to some of his friends who had not yet seen her, he did it by saying, awkwardly, "Ah, er Miss Carter, this is my wife, Miss Barton," calling her by her maiden name. Few men say "my wife" easily and naturally the first time they use the word in public. A funny case was that of a badly rattled bridegroom who stared blankly at the minister until asked if he took "this woman to be his lawful wedded wife," when he started sud denly and hastily, and said, in the Raleigh Post-Office MATT.
