The Twin City Daily says: "The Southern Inter States Immigration Bureau and the Southern Railroads have appointed Mr. J. C. Brown, of Monroe, Superintendent of excur sions to the Exposition ." The Argonaut says : " The Rocky Mount Brick and Tile Company burn ed their first kiln this week." " A grand excursion will be run from Rocky Mount to Norfolk, Ocean View, Virginia Beach and Old Point on Friday, J une the 12th." Gen. Sherman used to tell that "While traveling in Ireland he was once serenaded by a local band in Cork. To his surprise and delight the musicians played "marching through Georgia." He inquired where they had heard the tune, and was further surprised to hear that it was a very old Irish air, the origin of which wast in the mists of antiquity. An Old Slave's Generous Act. John Lewis, a mulatto born in Wel don, N. C, left twenty years ago and went North. He is now one of the wealthiest merchant tailors of Bos ton, Mass., his wealth being estima ted at not less than $100,000. He re cently purchased the farm and home stead of his former master, Dr. Davis, and put it in excellent condition. He offered the property and the income from it to his old mistress, who is now a widow, but the good lady de clinced the generous gift. Lewis then settled upon her for life an income sufficient for all her wants and it is paid to her regularly. Lewis remem bers lur kindness to him' when a slave with commendable gratitude. This is the first move of the kind in the South, and we suspect the sentiment is of Northern importation. Raleigh Post-Office MAIL SCHEDULE. . Drama in Ileal Life. St. Louis Globe Democrat. I witnessed a most touching and dramatic incident the other day, says M. J. Madden, of Chicago. It was at the UDion depot. Among the pas- sengeis leaving the train jast in from the South was a distinguished look ing old gentleman, and clinging to his arm was one of the most beauti ful girls I ever saw. To take the Joliet train there came down the stone steps a burly officer, in citizen's clothes, and by his side was the once society favorite, George Lipe, convicted of forging his moth er's name to valuable documents, and who, in spite of all the iuiluence brought to bear must seive his term in the penitentiary. A steel band was about the prison er's wrist attached to another about the officer's wrist. The two couples have described met directly in front of the big gate 'Oh, papa," exclaimed the girl, as her face lighted up with pleasure, 'here is George, come to meet us af ter our long journey." She rushed forward to meet the convict, and impetuously grabbed both his hands, The shock the sight of the manacles produced was posi tively tngtitiui. Her great eyes opened, her face blanched, she tried to speak but could not, and then she fell fainting into the arms of her father, who bore her to a carriage. Ths convict during this ordeal was a pitiable looking object. He uttered no word, but as he passed through the gate I saw his lower lip was cov ered with blood. He had bitten through it. The girl, I subsequently learned, Was the felon's fiancee, who had been in Mexico all the winter. Found the Hawk Knew How to Fight. From the Punxsutawney Spirit. Val S. Murray, of Gaskill township, espied a hawk's nest in a tree near his house. The nest contained a f am ily of young hawks. Val stood for some time gazing up at the nest, and probably, making a mental calcula tion or tne numoer ot nis spring chickens that went down the throat of the young thieves to satisfy their voracious appetites. Suddenly some thing flew back at the back of his head with a " whiz," and his hat was knocked off about 20 feet. On looks ing up Val saw the old mother hawk sailing in the air, giving vent to her anger at the intrusion and making swift darts downward that caused Mr. Murray to believe that he was in a dangerous place. The hawk would swoop down so close to his head that Val expected to be caught up almost any moment, carried away and torn to pieces. Fortunately he had an axe with him, and when the enraged bird would make a plunge at him he Would hold up the axe to keep it from striking. He got away unharmed and later on Jim Brewer came along and shot one of the hawks, which measured over two feet across th Jnjp. PU'W'.TrKRK. So. of V rom 1- .ii 'in OUTGOING MAILS. I Train P.O. According to the Kolnische Volks zeitung, a Moscow dentist appears to have solved the problem of supplying the human mouth with false teeth wnicn win grow into tne gums as firmly as natural ones. Dr. Znamen- sky has performed several successful operations on dogs, as well as human beipgs. The teeth are made of gutta percha, porcelain or metal, as the case may be. At the root of the false tooth holes are made, Holes are also made upward into the jaw. The tootli is then placed in the cavity. In a short time a soft, granulated growth finds ts way from the patient's jaws into the holes in the tooth; this growth gradually hardens and holds the teeth in position. It is stated that it does not matter whether the cavity in which the tooth is to be placed is one from which a natural tooth has been recently been drawn, or whether it has been healed for some years. 13 12 38 10 11 0 34 11 a in 7 45 8 15 10 40 ill 1 INI 3 15 5 35 4 30 a. m. i) 00 I Depot a m 8 15 8 45 11 SB ni 1 33 4 00 6 10 5 00 1 30 AJUUVAL.
