' ' mm matin tuning visitor. VOL ffcLJEIOKH:. -WEDNESDAY, J TJX. IT 8, 1091: 64; NEWS MOTES ABOUT THE CITY. What Our Reporters See and Hear Worth GiTing to Our Headers News in Brief. DoD.t forget the excursion to Little ton tomorrow. Has the matter of a Dew hotel died entirely out, or does it merely slum ber? Beyond a few minor cases, there was nothing belore the mayor this morning. The News, of Pearsall, Texas, July 4th, acknowledges the receipt of the first open boll of cotton of this year's growth This seems early to us. The removal of Mr. Patrick's office to the exposition grounds was ren dered necessary for convenience as to arrangements &c, as we learn. An excursion to Richmond tht lat ter part of this month, will wind up the list, perhaps, for the eeason. A more extended notice will te given hereafter. A crayon picture of Hon. Richard Stanford, member of Congress from North Carolina, from 1796 to 1810, is to be presented to the State Library by Mr. Samuel L. Adams his great grandson. The market was only tolerably well supplied this morning with fruit and vegetables. Water melons of the na tive growth have not yttputinau appearance, w hile peaches are scarce and not of very good quality. The gaps in the pavement on the streets north and south of the market house, as well as on Hargett and other streets, are being tilled with dirt preparatory to being paved. The work of graveling Hillsboro road from Major Tucker's residence out towards the fair grounds is being rapidly pushed under the direction of the road supervisor. Whnfinithcd it will be one of the best roads in the county. Mr. M. A Murray, Wilmington.Del. writes: "I had one of my severe head aches and was persuaded to try your valuable (Bradycrotine) medicine. 1 never had anything todo me so much good." j8 6t. Be on hand at Johnson street sta tion tomorrow morning atGo'cloC' The train will leave 6:15 sharp foi Littleton, It will be one of the mosi pleasant excursions of the season. Only $1 for round trip. Remember the excursion of the Raleigh and Gaston Relief Associa tion to Littleton tomorrow. Be on on hand, l'ou will spend a most de lightful time. We are pleased to learn that our esteemed young friend, Master Claude Denson, who sustained iDjury to his eyes on the 4th inst., is fast im proving and will no doubt, Boon be all right again. The Adams building for the use of the Farmers and Commercial Bank will be fitted up in splendid style. It is situated in the most prominent business section of the city, in the immediate vicinity of the cotton ex change. It is fully expected that the institution will be ready for busi ness about the middle of September. Messrs. Whiting Bros., are offering prizes of luscious grapes to the boys and girls which are well worth conten ding for. Read their interesting new advertisement in regard thereto. You can bet that the ones that earn the prizes will get something that will be a beauty to behold, as Messrs. Whiting Bros are connoisseurs on the grape and make fine varieties a speciality. T he matter of assessing property for taxation is a very delicate one, and requires all the sagacity of busi ness tact imaginable. We hope that our county commissioners will give it most serious consideration. Bear all sides patiently, and then put such a valuation on property as will not bear unjustly on any. Above all things, aou't be too hasty in render ing decisions. Tarbell Cheese at C. 0. Ball & Co'b. The annual meeting of the stock holders and Directors of the N. C, railroad, will take place tomorrow, at Greensboro. Sweet and sour Pickles at C. O. Ball & Co's. All the trains passing here, east ward, are loaded with passengers go ing to the sea coast. Morehead will soon be crowded to overflowing. Buy your Bam Shoulders and all kinds of smoked meat at C. 0. Ball & Co's. Prayer meeting tonight (Wednes day) at 8 o'clock at the Christian Church. All invited to attend. After prayer meeting the monthly business meeting will be held. Every mem ber is urgently requested to be present. Business of importance to be transacted. New Mullets, Berrings, Mackerel and Shad at C. O. Ball & Co's. Far Off. postal from Bon. K. P. Battle states that the rockets of the fire works on Saturday night last, in this city, were plainly visible at Piney Prospect Bill, about one mile from Chapel Bill, which is one of the most commanding views east of the Blue Ridge. The red colors of the rockets were seen the plainest. Cut Hum at Ball's. Officers Elected. The following officers have been selected for the capital cycle club: J. D. Turner, President; Louis A. Mah ler, Vice-President; Cecil G. Stone, Sec'y. and Treas.; Will A. Wynne, Captain. It has been decided to have a grand tournament on Monday night July 13th at Stronach's warehouse. The price of admission will be entirely reasonable. Condensed Milk 15 and 20 cents can at C. O. Ball & Co's. I. O. O. F. Regular meeting of Beaton Gales Lodge, No. 64, I. 0. O. tomorrow night at 8 o'clock sharp. Work in the first degree and other matters of importance will be brought before the Lodge, which requires the pres ence of every member. Candidates for the first degree will be on hand at 8:15 o'clock promptly. Every Odd Fellow cordially invited. List Your Purchases. WTe hope our merchants will not fail to list their purchase taxes with in the time prescribed by law, which is during first 10 days in January and July. It is highly important that the law be complied with. In this connection it may be well to state, that the merchants of Wilmington are preparing to test the constitu" tionality of the law in the courts, but this should make no difference in the matter of listing. Comply with the law as long as it is in focre. This is the duty of all good citizens. A. Painful Affair. Rumor has been busy in this city for several days past, over a reported embezzlement of funds, by Mr Clarence Busbee, a former Raleigh boy, but lately of Buena Vista, Va. We did not give currency to the rumor, because of the fact that we were unable to obtain any details of the matter, and did not de sire to risk giving publicity to what might turn out an exaggeration. We learn today, how ever, that the painful rumor is some what confirmed, as Mr. Busbee hab been arrested and detained in custody in compliance with a request from the Virginia authorities. It is in deed a sad case, and we refrain from further comment until such time as it may undergo legal investigation. Now that the Government has the Itata it don't know what to do with it. A. & M. College. The next session of the Agricultural and Mechanical college will open on September 1st, and there is every as surance of a larger attendance than heretofore. During the vacation, many important improvements will be made, especially in the mechani cal department, in the way of addi tional maohinery, etc. There is now a vacancy of one county student in the institution, and au examination will be held before the county super intendent of public institution tumor row for the purpose of filling th-; places. Funeral. The funeral services of the late Mrs. Sallie J. Lambeth was held from Edenton Street Methodist church yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Dr. Cordon officiating. There was a large attendance of relatives, friends and citizens generally. The inter ment took place at Oakwood ceme tery. The funeral obsequies of this lat8 Mrs. Helen A. Howard, whose death occurred on Monday, in the 61th year of her age, were held yesterday afternoon from Christ church at 5:30 o'clock, and the remains were inter -, red in the old city cemetery, the Rev. M. M. Marshall, D.D., officiating. The pallbearers were 1. Wiueturob, L. Newman, John T. Pullen, W. G. Separk, J. T. Morris and J. E. Bridgers. The floral tributes were beautiful and profuse. Patrick, dated July 2d, at Columbia, S. C, says, "The physicians in the State are heartily in sympathy with us. I was in Gov. Tillman's office when he opened your letter relative to days at the Exposition for South Carolina. Raleigh I fear will not accommodate the crowd that will be in attendance." This is the way it strikes other people, but we here in Raleigh don't seem to have any nervi s on the subject ; sti 1 the crowds are coming just the same and Raleigh will be discounted just to the extent she fails to accommodate. At our uBual State Fairs, the crowds are our own rural people who will allow themselves to be packed like sar dines, in the hotels and boarding houses, but when the crowds are from the four quarters of the earth and of a class who, being from the Northern cities largely and all strangers, will not tolerate this sardine packing, but sooner leave in disgust on midnight trains, and go home to advertise Raleigh and the South (?)
