ilW film I miiriiiiir lliKiMr vol Ff. A T, FP,T(T-TT, tJBSDAT", JULT 18, 1891: NEWS NOTES ABOUT THE CITY. What Our Reporters See and Hear Worth (Jiving to Our Header News iu Brief. Work on the street car Hue on Har gett street was in progress today. There will be no "let up" in the work of preparation for the Inter State Exposition from now out. Mr. 0. J. Parker, of this city, has been elected Superintendent of the Shelby graded schools. Grand Sire Busbee is rapidly im proving. He sits up, talks with his friends and eats moderately of solid food. Good news, indeed. Mr. B. R. Jolly is the sole agent for the Southern Inter-State medals now bo popular with everybody. Call and get one. They are pretty. The Governor's Guard will leave for the Wrigbtsville Encampment to morrow. Capt Batchelor will be in command and he expects to take down about forty men. Thai Switchback Railroad ridiug is something new in this country. The exposition grounds will be opt n to morrow evening and the Switchback will be an attraction. The office of commissioner Bobin son of the Agricultural department is now a "thing of beauty and joy." It reminds us of the office of a "well fed" editor. Work on the mechanical plant of the Electric street railway has com menceu in earnest. This now looks like coming right down to business. The cars will be running by AuguBt 15th so say those who ought to know. Gov. Holt has returned to the city. He is busily engaged today in attend ing to accumulated business so that he may be in readiness to go down to the encampment at Wrightsville, next Monday. We are under many obligations to Messrs Jones & Powell for a splendid watermelon of the Dorsey variety raised in Columbus Co., North Caro lina, it was green rhine, red meat, full of juice and so sweet. Ween joyed it hu ely. There is none bet ter. The ladies of Central Methodic Church are engaged in the good cause of raising funds to put down a handsome new carpet. When this i accomplished, cushions will be put in the new pews. It is expected that the church will be ready for dedica tion in a few weeks. It. will be to the interest of those who enjoy the sweets of the luscious juicy melon, or the profits from its sale to call and see Messrs. Jones & Powell. See their advertisement in another column. The matter of extra detective duty during the coming Inter-State Ex position is already engrossing the at tention of our chief of police. He will think it over and in due time will have all his regulations perfected. The people throughout the country may rely upon it that the best of or der will prevail in Raleigh during the "big show." A friend informed us that he had been trying for two weeks to engage a contractor to build an addition to his home located a few miles from the city. He could only find one party who made anything like an offer, and this was a mere nibble. There never has been a time when builders were so busy in Raleigh, as now. All of them have orders far ahead. Mr. C. D. Payne, publisher of the Union Signal, Chicago, III., writes: I never raw anything that would cure headache like your Bradycrotine. Julyl4 6t. Good for Kaleigh. Mr. A. Dughi has received an order for a considerable supply of fancy ice cream bon bona next week from Asheville, N. C, and Suffolk, Va. Hurrah for Raleigh. An awning is being put up in front of Messrs. W. B. Maun & Co's store, corner Fayetteville and Hargett sts. Gov. Holt today extended a cordial invitation to Gov. McKinly, of Vir ginia, to visit the N, C. Encampment and participate with him in the re view of the Worth Carolina troops. He also forwarded permission to the 1st Regiment of Virginia volunteers to enter North Carolina and remain in camp with the N. C. Guard. Delightful Evening. The switchback at the exposition grounds will be running tomorrow (Friday) night. Everybody invited. Free admission into the grounds. Executive Appointments. The Governor today made the foU lowing appointments: Capt. Geo. W. Myers company G. 4th, Regiment. Capt. J. N. Cregg, company, I 3rd Regiment. J. N. Gib bous 1st, Lieut., and E. S. Blackwell 2nd Lieut., company I. Kaleigh Interested. Suit was commenced against the city of New York last Monday by the heirs of the Edwards estate. The property involved is estimated to be worth over two hundred million dol lars. A large number of the claim ants live in North Carolina. Sad News. We deeply regret to announce that a letter was received here this morn ing Btating that Capt. J. J. Terrell, late superintendent of the Soldiers' Home in this city, was in a dying condition at the home of Mr. Sidney Terrell, his brother, near Rolesville. This is indeed sad news to a large number of relations and friends in Raleigh. Capt. Terrell is not expect ed to survive many hours. Daughters of Kebekah. All members are earnestly request ed to be present at the meeting to morrow night as business of import ance to every member will be transv acted. The degree of Rebekah will be conferred on some fifteen appli cants. Refreshments will be served after the conferring of the degrees. E. J. Williams. Sec'y. Will Play Raleigh. The Durham Globe says: Mr, Will Wynne's card in regard to the treatment of the Durham boys, when they went to Ral eigh to play ball, leaves the impress ion hat tthe second nine was beaten, not the first. The Globe is author ized to say that the Durham boys stand ready to accept a challenge from any white nine in Raleigh, the game to he played in Raleigh at any time that may be designated. A Good Idea. "Alec" Stronach says he knows of but one way to get even with the watermelon business. He has decid ed to give a grand watermelon feast in Pullen Park one night next week at which he will have three card loads of the fruit, which is now on the way. He says he expects to invite the en tire county, and a good time may be look ed for. He has gotten permission to use the park, and as we have moonlight nights, there ought to be a large crowd. Season Gales Lodge, No. 64, I. O 0. F., will meet tonight in regular communication at eight o'clock sharp. Work in the second degree and other matter.-, of importance to be attended to. This will be a very interesting and important meeting which requires the presence of every member. Candidates for the second degree will report promptly at 8:15 o'clock. A cordial invitation to all Odd Fellows. Thlkm, Sec. All trimmed millinery to be closed oat for cost and less, at Miss Mao uik Reese's, jy7tf 209 Fayetteville St. Brown Stone. We. have heretofore called attention to the fact that there existed in the western portion of Wake county a most excellent specimen of brown stone suitable for building purposes. We heard of these deposits soma time prior to the late war, and have often wondered why they were not utilized to a larger extent for residences. There is no better or prettier mate rial for the purpose as is shown from the fact that in most cities where it is available it has, in many cases, the preference. It is said that a quarry of the stone has been opened on the land of T. H. Booth, in Buckhorn township, near New Hill. It is said to be of One qvality, and being in close proximity to the Raleigh and Augusta Air Line road, we can see no reason why it should not be a source of profit. Specimens of the stone have been deposited in the State museum. Personal mention. Mr. Hugh Peters, one of Greens boro's most progressive citizens, is in the city today. Mrs. R. S. Tucker and daughters left today for White Sulphur Springs. Mr. J. P. Ferrell has gone to Eu rope. State Geologist Holmes has gone to Cape HatteraB on official business.
