All th.- talk now it the euc:inipinent at Wrightaville. State Geologist Holmes is now at work in Ashe county. 8ee notice of A. W. Haywood, Assignee, of John R. Williams. Mr. M. A. Parker shipped a lot of fine grapes this morning the first of the season. Our "bold soldier boys" the Gev ernor's Guard went'off today in liue spirits. Qood luck to them. The Black Diamond Quartette are astonishing all Europe success to the colored "Tar Heels." Another big sale is talk d of in the near future. Raleigh dirt is bound to rise. The Executive Committee of the Baptist State Sunday School Conveu tion meets in this city this evening. Don't forget Jones & Powell's splen did watermelons of native N. C , growth. They are certainly nice and ON 1CK. If it were not for the "rats" and "chesnuts" that we so much dislike we would say something about the auditorium and hotel. Boys with air rifles going about the streets shooting birds should be requested to stop their reckless work or the city assume damages to win dow paines. Have you provided for building a home for yourself by joining the Ral eigh Building and Loan Association? If not you are making a great mis take. Washout places in the sidewalks should be reported by the police and orders for their repair attended to. There is a bad section between cor ner Oakwood Avenue and North streets, east side. A private letter from Rev. Dr. J. J. Hall and party who went to Min neapolis, Minn., to attend the worlds convention of the Young People So ciety of Christian Endeavor, says ad are well and greatly enjoying them selves. He says that the convention is held in the exposition building and it was estimated that 16,0(0 attended the meeting on Sunday night last Mr. C. D. Payne, publisher of the Union Signal, Chicago, 111., writes: I never saw anything that would cure headache like your Bradycrotine. Julyl4 6t. Prof. Winston, President of the State University has returned from Europe where he went on a tour of what may be termed educational in spection. He comes ;back full of in formation of the most beneficial kind which will be of great benefit to the noble institution over which he pre sides. Seme thief or thieves entered the yard of a gentleman residing on East Hargett street, last Wednesday night and took from it some valuable and pretty flowers. Our people should be on the watch for such sneaks and if nothing else will do, give them a dose of lead. . Surely in such a case, it would be excusable. There is no abatement in the levees held by Superior Court Clerk.Thomp son, and hie assistant Mr Moye. There is a stream of callers all day looking after direct tax claims. It is a busy place, and more of the out croppings of huiua i nature can be seen there than at any other place in Raleigh. The new annex to the Yarboro House is rapidly being pushed to completion; when finished the build ing will be the most commodious of the kind In North Carolina. Raleigh will take good care of all who visit the exposition; there need be no uneasiness on that score. It is a set tled fact. Peanut candy, Cocoanut candy, 5 tents only." BARBBB & Pope's. ' There is less than the usual amount of sickness in the city for the season. Good news. Watermelons getting more plenti ful, but the prices are not yet down to the right level yet for the purses of the majority. . Next Wednesday Is "Governors Day" at the encampment when the troops will be reviewed by Governor Holt and perhaps Gov. Kinney of Va. Prof. Pauli is pushing the matter of the musical festival iu October with vigor. He says it will be the grandest event of the kind that has ever taken place iu North Carolina. Gov. Holt has excused Co. "B" of the State Guard, from attendance on the encampment. Sickness of the commanding officer is the cause. The recommendation for excuse was made by the Adjutant General. At 0 three o'clock this afternoon a meeting of the Executive committee of Trinity college was held at the Yarboro House. There was a full at tendance. The matter of the open ing of the next colkgiate year was under discussion. Delight i ui Evening. The switchback at the exposition grounds will be running this (Friday) night. Everybody invited. Free admission into the grounds. I. mm mi i ii Married. Last night at 7:80 o'clock, at the residence of Rev. Jonathan Wood, on South Wilmington street, and by him, Mr. Thos Medlin to Miss Lizzie Cross. g Executive Appointments. Gov. Holt today made the follow ing appointments as members of the N. C. Board of Health for the next two years: Dr. J. H. Tucker, Hen derson; Prof. F. P. Veuable, Chapel Hill; J. L. Ludlow, Winston. Death of Mr. Walter A. K am say. We deeply regret to announce the death of this gentleman which took place at his home in New Bedford, Mass. Mr. Ramsay was born and raised in Raleigh He was a brother of Mrs. W. E. Pell, of this city, Mrs. V. C. Pell, of Smithfield, Mr. Theo. N. Ramsay, of Norfolk, Va and Mrs. E L. Harding, of Brooklyn, N. Y. Daughters of Kcbekah. All members are earnestly request ed to be present at the meeting tonight as business of import ance to every member will be trans acted. The degree of Rebekah will be conferred on some fifteen appli cants. Refreshments will be served after the conferring of the degrees. E. J. Williams. Sec'y. Public Pomps With Public Dip pers. So far as the thirsty, famishing traveler is concerned what is the use of a public pump without a dipper ? Of course if there are two of them to gether one can pump while the other catches what he can in his hands, af ter the manner of Gideon's three hundred. But that makes the slop so annoying around these places. Give us an iron dipper, securely fastened, to every public pump and thousands will sing your praises, Mayor Badger. A Good Suggestion. We not ice that Prof. Hugh Morson, of this city, has been suggested as a suitable selection for the chair of Latin now vacant at the Chapel Hill University. We desire to add tur testimony to the entire fitness in eve ry respect of Prof. Morson. No bet ter selection could possibly be made. We hope the matter may be taken into the most favorable consideration. He is a gentleman of superior ability, and in the walks of private life is suited to adorn any place to which he may be selected. In connection with his accomplished associate, he has fit ted many a youth for the University. Now let the Institution Ishow its ap preciation of his merits. NO MOKE DOUBTS. The Electric Cars Have Come And They are Beauties. Four cars of beautiful finish and elegant design arrived at the Uuion Depot this morning billed from At lanta. They are most elegant in all their arrangements, some larger than those used on the old line. The me chanical arrangements under the seats and on top seem to be complete, l, t rather too complicated for us to describe. The cars are named, Jarvis, Vance, Albemarle and Swanannoa. They were made by the J. G. Brill company, of Philadelphia. The arrival of the cars and the progress of the work in putting down rails &c, should convince the most speptical that ' we will all soon take a ride." The Direct Tax. In the matter of direct taxes, it may be estimated that a much larger per centage will be called for than had been anticipated. This, we believe, is the estimate of Treasurer Bain and others in authority with whom we have conversed. We are rather of the opinion that this will cause some little drawback in the way of the ap propriation to the World's Fair at Chicago, which, it will be rememberv ed, was ordered by the General As1, sembly to be paid out of the fund sent to this State by the government of the United States. It does not ap pear clear to us that the appropria tion, made under the circumstances, would be entirely consistent with justice. If the Legislature had or dered the amount to be paid out of the direct tax fund, with the under standing that in case it was called for by claimants it should be reimbursed from the general fund of the State, then the matter would not have been in such questionable shape. But, as it is, if the amount appropriated to the World Fair should be paid, and the f uud thereby falls short for claim ants, then what is to be done under existing law. Of course we are un able to say what course Gov. Holt will pursue in the premises. We merely state the case as we under stand it. Soliloquized on the Street Cor ner. Two men of brain stood on the cor ner this a. m. and entered into the following conversation: 8ays Mr. Soreback to Mr Cockeye: Look here, Cockeye, don't you think this man of the Racket store this D. T. Swindell is going rather fast for a little man. Don't yon think his head is wrong? Don't you think he is building too many stores and buying out too many stocks, and trying to do too much anyway? And then, why is he selling goods so cheap? And nobody don't know where his money comes from. Yes, says Mr. Soreback, T think he is going to fail shortly. When h man comes here and gos to building brick houses by the acre, he is bound to fail. Yes, my wife thinks he will fail because she wont to his Martin street store and bought soin-? good so low she was vfraid to say she wonld take it all they might not let her have it Well, goodbye, Soreback, sail Cock eye; you and I don't seem to know much about Swiudeli All trimmed millinery to be closed out for cost and less, at Miss Magqih: Rkksk's, jy7tf . 209 Fayetteville .it The large additions in the way of specimens to the State museum has demanded a renovation of the room and a general rearrangement It is to be painted, and all thr shelves placed in more convenient position.
