Secretary Brown of the Railroad CommiBBion is busy writing up the proceedings of the session. State Treasurer Bain is much iin proved by hi6 short trip to the west ern part of the State. The reports of the cotton crop be ing daily received at the Agricultural department, are really disheartening. Rev. J. J. Barker is holding a pro tract ed meeting in the Methodist church at Clayton with good result. The hill just this side of the ex position grounds is being graded for the electric cars. Capt Rice "gin a treat,'- and "Alec" Stronach sajs he is going to do the same August 19th, at night will be a big time. Turner's N. C. Camer on is looking hale and hearty. Ral eigh air and fare undoubtedly agree with him." Attention is called to the adver tisement of Mr. M. Rosenthal!, Trus tee of Mr. 1. Winetrob. This is a rare opportunity to secure bargains. Don't fail to call at once and exam iue and try on some of those nibs lit suits which were made to order ant which are now offered at very low prices by M. Rosenthal, Trustee of I. Winetrob. Persons contemplating a trip to Wrightsville or Hammocks would do well to call at the Visitor office be fore going. They can save money by bo doing. Mayor Badger said today that everything considered, he presided officially ovir the most moral com munity in North Carolina. True, every word of it. A watermelon of pretty good size can now be had for a nickel, and the average colored person as well as the small boy of either race is compara tively happy. It has been suggested that, the next sale of lots in Raleigh be made during the exposition. This .will give the people of the State an opportunity to judge the value of Raleigh dirt. J ustices of the peace should call promptly at the office of the Register of Deeds and get the laws of 1891 to which they are entitled. It is highly important that they should have them. The bridge over the railroad on Billsboro Btreet shakes when an ordi nary country wagon passes over it. Is such a bridge sate for the street carB which will pass over it, every fewmin utesV Suppose it gives way, and a dozen or so persons are either killed or have limbs broken, won't damages have to come from some source? Bet ter erect a new iron structure at once It is much cheaper in the end and may Bave much trouble. Smoke the Special Permit cigar manufactured by J. M. Norwood. They are the best cigars in the city. They can be found at all the dealers. tmm 1 R-AJL-EICVei. THUKSDAIT, JTTZY 30, 1891: 83 The new linn of Barbee & Thouip IM will he a " team" in the eottou market and no mistuke. Now let the B nrdof Aldermen at their meeting on the first Friday night of next mouth see to it that Morgan street in, opened. A dispatch vas r 'reived here today announcing the death of Mr. Ed. Beunett, a printer ,and former resi dent of this city. We wore unable to learn the particular. The cry for more buildings iu Ral eigh is getting loud. A large num ber of persons want to put up resi dences and no one to build them. This is a rare state of things, and should be remedied if possible. There is a fortune here for somebody, if they will only come and get it. Workmen are engaged today is put ting up what are termed the feeding wires of the electric railway. The work in all its departments is pro gressing rapidly, and, we hear that there is a bright prospect that the cars will b.i runniug about the mid die of August. The funeral st rvices of the late Mrs. Saliie H. Fleming took place this morning at 10 o'clock, at the First Baptist Church and was attended by a considerable number of relatives, friends and citizens generally. Rev. Dr. J. J. Hall olliciated. An observant gentleman said this morning that the laying of the street car track to the exposition grounds would no doubt necessitate the open ing of another street to t lie western suburbs He gives as a reason that horses, and especially country horses are afraid ot the cars, and it will cause many runaways and smash ups. " Well, it is an ill wind that blows nobody any good." We have been laboring tor years to have Morgan street extended without result. Per haps now, necessity may cciue to the rescue. Dughi's parrots are mostly gentle, but he has one old fellow that has his liver out of order badly. He is as spiteful as "old Nick." Dughi says he lias tried.all he knows how to get him iu a good humor, but he won't like kindness worth a cent. He is a regular Mexican growler. Mr. Seth Jones, who keeps a board ipg housd on East, Martin street, says an old ex Confederate soldier stop ped with him a few nights since, while on his way to Wrightsville. He said he had not been to Raleigh since the attack on ex Governor Holden's office in 1864. He says it don't look at all like the same place, and he never would have known he was in Raleigh. Shouldn't wonder. The rush at the office of the clerk of the Superior Court, for direct taxes, has not much abated. There is a stream of visitors all day, and the officiating jclerk, Mr. Moye, is in his glory. He says that but for the fees of applicants the office might have been compelled to make an assign uient, as business in other respects is awful dull. Messrs. Lacy, King and Sherwood are much elated at the prospect for a very large crowd on their excursion to Richmond next Wednesday. It is going to be a "hummer" and no mis take. Never has there been a time when such a trip could be takeu at so little expense, and everything has done to render it peculiarly interest ing. Ample time will be given to see all the sights of the former capital of the Confederacy. Let it be a grand gala occasion. Special pains taken with ladies and children. All the comforts possible will be provided. Rev. James H. Cordon, pastor M. E. church, Wilson, N. We have been kindly furnished by the Commissioner of Agriculture with proof sheets of the crop report for the month of July As to cotton the report is as follows: The average condition of the crop in this State is 5dJ. Last year it was at this time 120. The nicst sanguine estimate now gives about 50 per cent of last years crops. This is the lowest average condition reported for this corp in years. The prospect of tobacco iu the gen eral average is 85; this is five points lower than at this time last year. As to Wake county there has been a scarcity of farm labor, consequently the crops have not been freed from grass; all crops are small and back ward; too much rain has thrown them backward and the general out look is anything else but promising, as crops are two to three weeks late, and, in many sections the stand of cotton and tobacco is poor.
