NEWS NOTES ABOUT THE CITY.
What Our Reporters Bee and
Hear Worth Wiving to Our
Headers News lu Brief.
We are promised a break in the
heated term next week.
Next Wednesday is the great cham
pionship firemens race at Durham.
Raleigh will be there In all her glory.
Notwithstanding the uuasual long
spell of hot weather, there is not more
sickness in Raleigh than usual at this
season of the year.
Poles are being placed in position
between St. Marys and the exposition
grounds for the electric street rail
way.
The Union depot is beginning to
assume something like beautiful pro
portions. It will, indeed be an adorn
ment to our city. v
The lawn parties at the parsonage
of the Edenton Street M. . Church
and at Mr. F. L. Bailey's wpre well
attended last night and an enjoyable
time was experienced.
There seems to be a general paint
ing and brushing up in the city.
Everybody wants to put on the best
appearance for the exposition. This
is all right.
Don't fail to gather up all the old
curiosities you can and report to Mr.
Gill who has in charge the matter of
Wake county's exhibits at toe ex
position
A country gentleman said this
morning that there was a point
twelve miles north of the city from
which some of our church steeples
could be seen. We did not get the
exact locality.
We regret to announce the death
of Dr. S. P. Waldo, which took place
early this morning at his home in
Gary. He leaves a family and a large
circle of friends to mourn their loss.
Rev. C. Rowland of Italy, Texas,
will begin a series of meetings at
Wake Chapel church, some til teen
miles south from this city, on the 23d
He is said to be a great preacher. It
will doubtles pay to go out and hear
him.
There is not a prettier picture gals
lery in North Carolina than Mr. F. A
Watsons. Call and see it. No Strang
er should come to Raleigh witbon
paying this emporium of art a viei
It is one of the most attractive places
in the city.
Regular meetings of Raleigh Paint
ers Union, No. 1, will be held here
after in Rescue Hall on Friday night
of each week at 8 o'clock sharp. Bus
iness of importance tonight every
member requested to attend.
R. L. Xmas.
There is bnt very lictle moocshin
ing business how being carried oh in
this section. Collector White and his
efficient corps of deputies are con
stantly on the watch, so that the
nefarious business of defrauding
"Uncle Ssm" of revenue is quite a
risky one. ,
Raleigh was laid out in a city by
commission rs appointed for the pur
pose in April, 1792. This will make
us a hundred years old next April.
Let us have a centennial celebra
tion. What say all of our folks? The
Visitor starts this now, mind you.
Don't steal our thunder. j
Under all circumstances, under all
conditions.unnerall influences,Brady
crotine will promptly cure all head
aches, aug. 18 6t
Mr. J. Schwartz, our model butcher,
No. 122 Fayetteville street, has just
had put up in front of his store a nice
substantial awning. If you are in
want of anything in the meat line,
call and talk to him. He keeps it all
in a splendid ice refrigerator, cool and
nice. No pork at present as it is too
hot now. But everything good and
in season. The awning keeps all
around cool, and the refrigerator at
tnds to matters inside. Call and
pee for yourselves.
It is expected that the pension tax
this yeat will yield $90,000. Last year
Mitchell county did not collect any
tax for pensions and hence no apt
plicant) will receive pensions from
that county for 1890.
We hear that the prospects for both
of our excellent Female Colleges the
coming session are splendid. Every
body except the most prejudiced ao
knowledges our superiority in the
way of location and other advan
tages. The only difficulty is we need
more schools. Let the Baptist Fe
male College be hurried up. There
is ample room for all.
If you want to build or repair a
house, just try to procure a builder
for a contract for immediate work,
and see how you will come off. The
contractors are all far ahead in their
business. See if they don't tell you
so. Raleigh needs more workmen
no doubt about it. It also needs more
investmeut in small sized dwellings.
We were told several days since by
arfriend that we overstated the mat
ter in saying there were no houses for
rent in Raleigh. We have taken oc
casion since then to make, additional
enquiries, and are firmly of the
opinion that we are right. It is al
most impossible to secure houses
eligibly situated and suitable for
families of small means. We are
borne out in this assertion by those
who ought to know.
Lives of poor men oft remind us
honest toil don't stand a chance; more
we work we leave behind us bigger
patches on oar pants. On our pants
once new and glossy, now are patches
of different hue; all because subscrib
ers linger and won't pay up what is
due. Then let all be up and doing;
send in your mite be it so small, or
when the snows of winter strike us
we shall have no pants at all.
Mayor'sCourt.
A quarrel which did not amount to
a row took place yesterday between
Mr. Sylvester Pennington and Ralph
J. Peace, a colored driver. It seems
that Mr. Pennington had for some
time been doing work for Peace in the
shape of shoeing horses. Peace had
not come to time with Mr. Penning
ton in the matter of pay, and yester
day when he went to Mr. Pennington
to have a shoe put on, he told Peace
in language not to be misunderstood,
exactly what he thought of him for
not paying for the work heretofore
done, alley ing that Peace had drawn
certain money out of which he had
promised to pay the debt. As the
old saying is, "one word brought on
another." Peace finally left Mr. Pen
nington's shop but left behind an old
horse shoe which he said Pennington
might have: Pennington said he
would not have it, and pitched it
after Peace. It entered the carriage
and Peace said it struck him. Pen
nington said it didn't. The question
of assault was raised, before Mayor
Badger, as well as final jurisdiction
of the mayor where deadly weapons
are used. Messrs. Peele and Snow
were present. They fixed it up in the
way of a compromise. Pennington
paid costs. Curtain dropped to slow
music.
Meeting of Aldermen.
A special session of the Board of
Aldermen was held last night, being
called mainly for the purpose of con
sidel ing matters relative to the Hills
bbro street bridge.
Alderman Strouach, of the street
committee made a report, stating
that a conference had been held with
Maj. John C. Winder, General Man
ager of the Seaboard System, in which
that official expressed himself as will
ing to comply with the proposal for
widening the bridge.
Alderman Pogue introduced the
following resolution:
Resolved, that this board request
the Raleigh andGaston Railroad Com
pany to add to the sou Lh side of Hill a
boro street bridge one more section
of fifteen feet in width. This was
amended, requesting the bridge to be
widened to the full width of the street
and the resolution passed.
Accident.
This morning about 9 o'clock, as
Dennis Heartt, the 14 year old son of !
our esteeemed friend, Maj. 0. D. j
Heartt, was handling a pistol with
the muzzle pointed toward him it ex
ploded, the ball taking effect between
the middle and .index fingers of the
right hand and lodging in the back
part of the limb. He went at once to
a physician who, after administering
chloroform, extracted the ball, and
at last accounts he was doing as well
as could be expected after such a
painful shock.
It is fortunate that the ball enter
ed the hand, because it operated as a
breaker to the body. Had it struck
him either in the chest or stomach
the most serious consequences might
have resulted. It was a narrow es
cape and we congratulate our young
friend that it was no worse.

For the Growler.
Correspondence of the Visitor.
X. Y. Z. c ommunication must have
been written by one of those eternal
grumblers that would have the wholo
business of the block between Har
gett and Martin streets stopped for a
whole day rather than have him go
three steps out his way ouce a week.
1 suggest to ou and all others of like
nature, stop your growling at those
who a striving to give people work
and to build up the city. Attend
strie'ly to your own business and you
will find no time to growl at other
people, is the expression of the wri
ter and everybody else who adheres
to that rule. L. R. W.
