RALEIGH, N. C, SEPTEMBER 1, 1891.
A It All l li PATENT.
' Mr. L. A. Fort has just secured a
patent on an automatic window sash
holder, which is doubtless a good thing
Mr. Fort claims for it that it presses
the lower and upper sash together in
such a way as to prevent rattling and
keep the cold air out, while it
does not prevent the sash from being
raised or lowered at will. We know of
nothing much more disagreable than
to be kept awake during a freezing
blustery night by the continuous rat
tle of the saBh and finally have to
get up in the cold and look up some
sticks to wedge the window with. If
Mr. Fort has met this difficulty he is
a benefactor.
THE CHILIAN WABEjDED
Balmaceda was defeated by the
Congressional party in the battle cf
last week, his forces thoroughly scat
tered and demoralized, and he is re
ported to have fled the country. Val
paraiso and Santiago have both fall
en into the hands of the Congression
al forces, and it is probable that there
will be very little more lighting. The
United States is placed in a some
what embarrassed position, having
recognized the Balmaceda's govern
ment aa the continuation of the gov
eminent of Chile.
The Colored A. and M. College.
Last Friday the Trustees of the
Colored Agricultural and Mechanical
College returned to the city from
Winston, Greensboro and Durham
where they had been examine sites
They report having been received
with the greatest civility. In the af
ternoon they visited the eligible site
offered by the people of Raleigh. It
Is most advantageously situated.
comprising about fifty acres, with the
prospect of about two hundred acres
of admirable farming land. It is only
aoout a mile and a half from the
State house on the line of the R. & D
ana JK. & A. A. L. Roads. In addition
to the land, Raleigh offers, in cash
7,000. Both will aggregate about
$18,000. It was finally decided to post
pone the selection of the site until
October, and in the meantime the
soliciting committee will make further
efforts.
It is but justice to say that our col
ored citizens have exhibit most com
mendable zeal in the matter, and it is
clear, that the worth and intelligence
among them are anxious that Raleigh
shall secure the prize.
