Dr. Nash, of Central Methodist church, last night, had occasion to re fer to the spitting upon the carpet by some person the night before. It is passiDg strange that there should be those found in a decent community so filty in their habits and abandoned to decency as to mutilate and deface church property in this way. This means one cent a mile each way. This is glorious news and ensures for the exposition a tremendous crowd. A telegram was also received here yesterday from Mr. F. W. Clark, Gen eral Passenger Agent of the Seaboard Air Line, announcing that his system would also give the one cent a mile rates over all their roads. The Misses Ella Duffey and Ada La tham, who have been visiting their cousin, Miss Duffey Conn, for the past two months, left on yesterday for their homes, in Alexandria, Va., leav ing many who regret their going and greatly desire their early return to the "City of Oaks." Electric Car Bates. Correspondence of the Visitor. It is noticed in your paper that you urge the charge of only five cents a passenger to the exposition grounds on the electric cars. This is based it is supposed on the current rumor that a fare of. ten cents will be charged on the electric railway for all points beyond the corporate limits. I Now in accordance with the views of nearly every body who has talked j upon the subject, such a course as ! this is well calculated to render the j lines unpopular from the start. Just aa an illustration, let us suppose a i passenger gets on the cars at the cap itol, now the starting point. He goes as far as Maj. Tuckers' corner which is about the end of the city limits and ! payB five cents- This is hardly three ; quarters of a mile, making it at the ' rate of six cents a mile. This is al ; most rid i uulous and is not to be found in any city of considerable size in the ! United States. The proposition is to charge five cents within the corporate limits and 10 cts if the cars run outside. Now if the electric cars are intended merely as a means of riding for pleas- : urQ there might be some excuse for this, but it would rather appear that "convenienc " shouH be taken into account, At the proposed tarill of rates the electric cars will prove of ; little no advantage to persons in the immediate suburbs whos'i daily callings reqire their attendance in the city, and it is prepoterous to sup pose that they will be patronized to any great extent. It is a matter no less grave for the street car company than for the public. It is the general desire that the rates shall be as rea ' sonable as in rnoBt other cities It has betn hinted that the ten cent ar rangeinent is proposed, so that it may be consistent with the rates charged heretofore by the Air Line road. There is no good reason why the pub lie should suffer to accommodate a corporation and they willsoa?cide The exposition grounds are not two miles from the capitol, and a charge of five cents a mile is monstrous when it is considered that in some cities of the south, a distance of about st veu or eight miles is traveled lor the same sum FAIRNESS.
