Distressing Suicid .
News reached here today of a most
distressing suicide which occurred
early this morning near Auburn, in
St. Mary's township, this county. Mr.
Wm. Sturdivant, a well known citi
zen, left his home for the purpose, as
was supposed at the time, of attend
ing to his ordinary daily duties. He
was found dead about an hour or so
afterwards about two hundred yards
distant with a bullet hole through
his head. The report is that he had
placed the muzzle of a rifle in his
mouth and pulled the trigger with
his feet. Death must have resulted
immediately.
Mr. Sturdivant was about 53 years
old but was unmarried. He served
in the Oak City Guards' of this city
during the war, and won the reputa
tion of being a brave soldier. He was
somewhat addicted to drinking some
years ago, but latterly had led a very
sober life. He was a kind hearted
and most genial gentleman
It is stated that the locality selected
for the suicide is about the same lo
cality at which a brother of Mr. Stur
divant was shot ;,nd killed several
years ago.

The Goldsboro Augussays: "The
Raleigh train was several hours late
in ifs arrival here yesterday after
noon, again missing its local South
em connections. This thing should
be stopped."
We called attention to this matter
several days since, and we are glad
the Augus is helping us out. The
misconnection at (ioldsboro is ai
source of much inconvenience at this
time, when numerous correspondents
of the Wilmington and other papers
expect to give daily accounts of the
exposition and other matters at the
State capital. We hope the B. dp D,
and the Atlantic Coast Line may
come to some arrangement by which 1
close connections may be made at
Goldsboro, even day without fail.
