He was before the mayor this morning and confessed the charge. At last accounts the mayor had the matter under consid eration. This should be a warning to such attempts in the future. Cards are out for the marriage of Col. Benehan Cameron to Miss Tali ferro Mayo, of Richmond, Va. The ceremony will take place at All Saints Church, Richmond, October 88th. Miss Mayo is of one of the first and most influential families of the Old Dominion, belonging to a large line of distinguished ancestry. Drive out to Oakdale and see what ts going on. The Capital City Land Company are pushing things, open ing up beautiful streets, building houses, and will commence work next week on the electric street car line down Person street to Oakdale. They will have their auction sale of lots October 28 and 29 Church Dedication. It has now been definitely decided upon to dedicate Central Methodist Church in this city on the 22nd of November. Bishop O. B. Galloway, of Nashville, Tenn. , will preach the dedicatory sermon. Soldiers Home. Mr. B F. Hanes, tobacco manufac tnrer of Winston, has two boxes of very flue chewing tobacco on exhi bition with the Forsyth county dis play, which he proposes to have sold at the close of rn exposition and to donate the proceeds to the Soldiers Home. The Expositfon is somewhat like an advertisement, the benefits to be derived from it cannot all be seen at once. It has now been established to the complete satisfaction of all the people of Raleigh that the Southern Inter-Stnte Exposition is a giuxd success. It now remains to make it a source of farther benefit to the people of Raleigh, to North Carolina and to the South. Next week we are to have with us the Governor of Florida; the weds after the Governor of Maryland and the Fifth Maryland regiment, the great citizan soldiery regiment of the South. A large audience was at English's Opera House last night, to witness the initial presentation of John Pal mer's classic production, "Last Days of Pompeii." The play is the medium of a splendid display of the spectacu lar, and the scenic effects employed are in every respect worthy of the ef fort. The ensemble is good and the utmost care is taken to bring out those positions capable of the best artistic results. The story is kept close to that of the famous novel and the action is forcibly maintained. The spectacle will be repeated this and tomorrow evenings. Indianapo lis (I ud ) Journal. Kndden Death. We most deeply regret to announce the death of Mr. J. H Davis, which took place 1 st night at his residence ou wh'it is knowi' as the Lewis daily farm just northwest of the city, at 9:30 o'clock. Mr. Davis was la his usual health yesterday and ;u do 1 the Expo sition. J nst before dusk he was in Raleigh and at the store of Me-srs. Eberhardt & Pescud. The immediate cause of death is not known. Mr. Davis was nn Eng lishman by birth, but has beti iu this country for several years. He was, we h arn, about 37 years of aye aud had lor sometime carried on success fully a dairy farm. He wus a most genial, kind heartnl gentleman and enjoyed the confidence of a large circle of friends. We believe he married a d lighter of the late Rich ard Finch, who v a6for ninny years teller of the old Bank of Cape Fear in Raleigh.
