Nothiog imprsases the observer so much as the unsuitable efforts of ordinary people to pattern after peo ple of great wealth. Think of a family with an income of $1.00) a month trying to Leep up in style, entertainment ana areas, witn a family who can give a $10,000 evening party. Think of a young lady whose father is worth a $100,000 essaying to cope with those richer circles who adorn themselves with $25,01 0 neck laces and other dazzling displays of fortune and fashion, and think how she must chafe under her inability to keep up. How she despises her own poverty, and naturally look with greater disdain upon those who have much less than she can boast. The very aisparagement sue suiters in the comparison which her pride forces upon her, renders her more intolerant to those who suffer in a like comparU son with herself. A writer in speaking of Newport, says, "The whole town is dominated by the msjesty of millions." Newport is the focus for this county's extremest wealth and smartness The millionaires have made it famous and they deeply resent any "poach ing on their preserves " While out driving recently in her excess of luxurious elegance, a very great belle and heiress put up her glasses and inquired plaintively why some one did not arrest those shabby sightseers for spoiling the view. She was simp ly expressing the sentiments of her kind, who c mpletely possess the place, keep a succession of irreproach able equipages rolling in splender over its smoothe drives, support Bummer palaces on the right and on the left of the green shaded avenues and for three months flood the pic turesque old city with beauty, tl 1 , a giaiuor oi ricnes ana ceaseless em e meat." These people have the one object J! 1 . . 1 uispmy, constantly uppermost in their minds, and to this they bend their energies and exhaust their ver life forces; frequertly as unreal even in their warmest grotulatioos, as the acting uDon the stage. Noth ing within the range of human pur pose, so effectually shuts happiness (which is, intuitively, the object of all human effort) out of the life and experience as ainbiti n of wealth and uride of di.snlx v It-, in nnfc noocma X" f j - " " -J tiu.i liiiy.aoai J to go to Newport, or to confine our search among the rich alone, for this class Ol people Ttiey are to be found up and dow l the land. There arc thousands of them in North Carolina, and too many, alas, in Raleigh. How many are there here among us, who are imitating those just above them in point of possession, even to the sacrifice of the comfort of their fami lies and too frequently involving themselves in deht, that dog their livjs, likd packs of hungry wolves ou the steppes of Russia, encroaching and encroaching until ever power is taxod to stay the pak till relief is reached.
