people of limited means, but the
Covenant seems to be a specially lib

amount of money to the people in

have refused none where satisfactory
security was offered. This institu

people.

At a met ting of the Board of Ah'er
men, held last night, it was determin
ed to appoint a committee, to confer
with the Trustees of the "Rex Hos
pital fund' looking to some action in
carying out the provisions of the
bequest mad ui&ny years ago for the
establishment of a hospital in this
city for the inline, etc. The fund
bequeathed was invested mainly in
confederate securities, the most of
which was lost. There was, however,
a small nucleus left, and, this, by
jad. clous investment has now run up
to over $27,0)0. It is hoped that there
may be some means effected by which
this much needed charity may be
established in our midst.
LiuiiU Blumeuberg.
Those who attended the concert
given by Louis Blumeuberg, the
famous violoncellist, and the Boston
quintet club in Conservatory hall,
last evening, were agreed that it was
one of the finest musical entertain
ments presented in Qtica in many a
day. The programme announced tor
the occasion was carried out with
great success. Blumenberg appeared
in the Utica opera house four years
ago last month, under the manage
nient of Professor Louis Lombard,
and t-cored a brilliant success, and
the renewal of bis acquaintance last
evening was a pleasure. He is a fine
artist and deserves all the compli
ments that have been paid to him. -Utica

A Smash.
Yesterday afternoon between 5 and
6 o'clock there came near being a
regular serious smash up on Salisbury
street. A team of mules hitched to a
wagon 1 jaded with cotton became
frightened at a street car turning the
corner of Morgao and Salisbury
streets, just at the arsenal. In spite
of the driver's best efforts to check
them they darted off at fearful speed
down South Salisbury street, when
just below the establishment of
Messrs. Ed wards & Broughton, a lit
tie fellow, presumed to be a son of
the driver, fell off, and, it was leared
that he was either killed, or seriously
injured. He was taken into the
O ackhmith shop of Mr. Ralph An
drews where an examination was
u de. It was found that the little
fellow was only a little bruised. The
mules turned rapidly around the cor
ner of Martin street, and were checked
up near the post office. The driver
escaped what seemed at one time
certain death. Mr. N. B. Broughton
who witnessed the scene, said it was
one oi the most fearful sights he had
ever seen.

DEPARTMENT
In our Shoe Department, while catering to
the wants of all or nearly all, and those who
we do not cater for are the persons who want
OUR
a shoe so low in price as not to be good, and
shoes that are not good we do not care to sell.
Of all articles which enter into our dally per
sonal wear the shoe is probably the last to
SHOE
practice poor economy upon. While of
course we keep shoes at a great many differ
ent prices, we do not lose sight of the fact
that we must sell a good shoe or lose much
of our shoe custom. We do not lose many
in this wy, but we do gain customers, for
