Mr. Henry E. Litchford, who has
catered to the pleasures of our people
during the past month or so, has yet
in view some of the best shows of the
country. Our citizens need have no
fears of not being amused in the dra
maticline. "Henry" is "in it," and
that means success.
Let us all talk about the centennial
for Raleigh next year. We. can get
up a big boom for our beautiful city,
Jf we will but do our duty. Next
year will be an opportune time, be-,
cause in addition to the political ex
citement, we can manage to work up
a real business boom for Raleigh com
blned with pleasnre.

The Lions Mouth.
The great theatrical attraction this
week will be the performance to be
given next Saturday night, by Mr.
Frederick Warde. the eminent traget
dion at Metropolitan Hall. Mr. Warde
can now justly claim to be the fore
most American actor in the tragic
line, and he will be supported by a
flue company. Those desiring to at
tend should secure seats at.Robbitt's
drug store, as there will no doubt, be
a large crowd.
Our Poor.
This cold spell reminds us that
there are no doubt in he vicinity of
Raleigh, many persons who are al
most entirely bereft of the ordinary
comforts in the way, specially, of
fuel. We hope our benevolent socie
ties and citizens generally will, as far
as possible, widen their field of ope r
ationB so that none may suffer. Help
iug the unfortunate always brings
good to the heart, and while all can
not be blest vith the power of giving
profusely, let us do what we can to
alleviate i.uman suffering in our
midst.
Exercises Today.
The exercises today at the exposi
tion grounds were opened with prayer
by Rev. Dr. W. 8 Black. A most in
teresting concert wad given by the
orphans of the Oxford Asylum, who
are here in large numbers. Addresses
were delivered by Hon A. H. A. Wil
Hans and others. Among the features
of interest was an exhibit from Texas
on wheels, Races, balloon ascensions,
etc., made up the amusements of the
day.
Sensible.
The Winston flally SentineJ says:
Of course there is nothing like prin
ter's ink, but it begins to look as if it
would be all the better if there was a
little more practical work on the Chi
cago exhibition and a little less gass
ing about ambitious projects for the
future. There has already been more
talk made and scribbling done over
Mrs. Palmer and the women mana
gers of the woman's department than
there was over the whole show ia
Paris.

take place tomorrow, Thursday, at

W. H & R- S. Tuckbh & Co.
Settled.
A correspondent of the New Berne
Journal has effectually disposed of
the spelling of that city. He says:
"The Colonial Records published
by the State and edited bo ably by
the late Col. William L. Saunders fix
the matter beyond all doubt or per
adventure. De Graffenried spelled it
New Bern, and the Colonial Records
show that it was so spelled rrom 1739
to 1771. The correspondent made a
partial examination of the Colonial
Records and found them 'ablaze with
the name New Bern.' "

A Lesson.
The incorrect report of the corres
pondent of the Baltimore Sun rela
tive to the views of Gov. Holt as re
gards the Alliance and other matters,
should be a warning to those who in
terview our public men. It should
be remembered that an incorrect re
port of the views of prominent per
sons is liable to work serious iuj ury at
times. Of course the disclaimer of Gov.
Holt will be known by most of our
people, but then the report has eone
into sections which the Governor's
denial cannot reach. A halt thould
be made to wild assertions on the
part of many newspaper reporters It
is easy enough to publish what is
correct. All false paintings are b t
acts of gross injustice and do no cred
it to the journals which print them.
