THE RIGHT DIRECTION. Florida is moving in the right di rection in reference to the World's Fair The 8tate Convention which met at Orlando, in October seems, to have gotten matters somewhat into Bh"pe for that State. Something of the sort should be done in North Carolina by all means. If when the time arrives, nothing has been done, scarcely a man, woman or child in the State, but that will feel absolutely ashamed of the short coming, and yet nothing is being done. Some body must take the lead, or nothing will be accomplished to the end. We trust the Governor and his advisers will try and do something. Strong, vigorous action in this matter will meet the approbation of the people. Methodist Conference. Last Friday night Rev. R. C. Bea mon, of Wilmington preached a grand sermon. On Saturday Bishop Gal loway presided. The opening service was conducted by Rev. Moses Hunt. The Colportage board reported Rev. Mr. Gattis, of Durham, re appointed. Revs. T. W. Avent, T. W. Reeks, W. H. Call, J. C. Crisp, J. R. Bouton, J. B. Bobbitt, R. W. Townsend and E. L. Pell were put on the supernumerary list. Revs. Foy, Bailey, Hooker, Wheeler, Moses, R. 0. Burton, Lovin, Ricaud Martin and North superannuated. The committee on books and periodicals recommended Nashville publications; Bright Jewels and RaU eigh Advocate were heartily endorsed. The Bishop was requested to re-appoint Dr. Black Supt. of Orphan Asy lum. The Bishop was requested not to hold this Conference hereafter before December 1st. Rev M D. Hix, R H. Taylor, A. F. Parker, H G. Stanley, and J H M Giles were received into full connection. The Bishop's ad dress was superb. The educational report recommended twenty seven hundred dollars for Trinity College Trustees elected as recommended Greensboro, Littleton and Murfrecs boro Female College recommended and plans looking to transfer of Mur freesboro Female College to confer ence were ad opted The Bishop made a grand speech on education. Dr. Cordon, of Raleigh preachedin the afternoon and pleaded all. Good missionary mass meeting tonight. Dr. Morrison, Missionary Secretary made an earnest and elo quent address. Grand crowds are in attendance and three largexcursiors camming tomorrow. The Bishop will ordain the cl ass of deacons and elders. Conference adjourned this morning. The next session will be held at Golds THE SOLDIERS' HOME, We are glad to know that contribu tions continue to come in for this noble institution, a1 though by no means in accord nice with its deserts We would like to see some grand ef fort put forward in the direction of making it a permanently endowed charity It is. far from being a credit to the State to have an asylum for our ndble- ex Confederals in a lan guishing condition Many schemes have been devised for aiding the home, but all of them appear to be of a local character, or nearly so. It Is An institution that should not ap peal to the aid of any section of North Carolina. It becomes the peo pie of our State of all portions to aid in its comfort. This should be done, and it should not be done in a grudg ing manner. The touching and oeau tiful allusions of Col. J. 8. Carr, in bis speech at the expositions grounds, should appeal to the sympathies of all. The old soldiers, in the nature of things, cannot be long with us. The scythe of "c'd Father Time" will soon cut them off, and it becomes us to at least smooth their pathways to the grave. The closing festival of the year will soon be upon us, and we hope that some method during th time may be devised for increasing the funds of the home, flow would it do to get up a grand fair for its benefit? If this will not do, then we hope that some other suggestion may be made likely to accrue to the benefit of the cause. We are open to suggestions. According to the N. Y World, the owner of the biggest bead in the world is not a politician and does not even live in a very big city. He is Loltus Jones Parker, of . Louisiana av enue, Washington, D. C, is forty eight years of age, and is a highly re spected man and citizen. Mr. Par ker's cranium is thirty two inches, or nearly a yard in circumference, while the ordinary man's is but twenty or twenty one inches in girth. The sto ry is told in the national capital that when Mr. Parker was twenty eight years old three prominent physicians believing him to be destined to an early end, offered to maintain him handsomely as long as he lived for the privilege of making an autopsy thereafter. Mr. Parker has lived twenty years in excellent health to the great discomfiture of the medical men. They are said to believe that he has a twin brain, but his mental processes seem not different from those of his fellows We noticb ",that many of our ex changes insist on spelling "Ashboro," the county seat of Randolph, with an "e." This is not in accordance with our views, and we would like to see the matter set right. Perhaps our friend Capt. Ashe's ancestral knowl edge can settle the matter. British capitalists have $175,000,000 invested in the Argentine Republic. When they get their money back they will invest a big lump in the South ern States.
