The county commissioners were iu

transacted much routine bnslttess. It
is an important session as the bonds
of county-officers are to be renewed
The Tobacco Exposition at Rocks

The 'Fast Mail' at Metropolitan
Hall last Satnrday night was one of
the finest productions of the kind we
have ever seen in Raleigh. The scenic
offoota were most admirable and
worked like a charm. The play U a
good one and we commend the com
pany to ail lovers of amusement.

papers will cheerfully note them if
they are informed of them.
The time is running down, January
will goon be here and the location of
the permanent exposition is to be set
tied at the meeting in San Autonla
Still there has not been any move
ment to have a delegation present
from Raleigh. Why not! Do we

Quite a rain storm prevailed here

Welcome week in Wilmington was
one of the grandest successes that has
ever taken place in that city.

Sheriffs will soon be coming in freely
and Treasurer Bain's strong box will
be amply replenished.
It is expected that the cars will be
running on the Hargett street line
the latter part of next week.
This has been a heavy day on the
news gatherer. "The snapper up of
unconsidered trifles" has had a hard
time to fill local columns
Bring in your advertisements,
Christmas is approaching and it will
not do to hide your wares under a
bushel.
The street car fare is now only five

Attention is directed to the adver

The great crowd that is likely to
attend the operatic performance next
Wednesday night, shows that the
Raleigh peop'e appreciate first class
troupes. It shows, too, that a new
opera house with all the modern ap
pliance9 would prove an immense suc
cess. L.et us nope tnat we wm soon
have it.
It's going to be dull here after the
Christmas holidays are over, at least
uotil the political pot commences to
bo'.l, unless we get up something to
relieve the monotony. But we can
have a hustling time, if we just will
make arrangements to celebrate Ra
leigh's centennial. We hope our
hustling friend, Alex. Stronach and
others will put their shoulders to the
wheel and help the Visitor to boom
this important movement.
Badly Needed.
No person who wishes to purchase
real estate, is likely to do sc, until
the title is made to appear all right,
and, the proper way to find out about
this, is to examine the records of the
Register of Deeds office. To do this,
it is almost absolutely necescary to
have a proper index book. It would
be an almost endless a task to look ui
records by searching each book of
entry with no date as to the number
of the books, or the pages on which
deeds are recorded. The old index
book has .eoome so torn aud useless
that it is almost out of the question
for it to be used to advantage.
Now, it is the duty of the Board of
County Commissioners to look into
this matter and apply the remedy at
once. It is a convenience to which
the people of the county are entitl ed.
Of ooursa, it will cost something to
get up such an index as is suitable
for the purpose, but then, it is o e of
those matters that will more than
pay for any reasonable outlay. The
coinmisMoners are now in session, and
the people have a right to expect
that they will promptly aot in the
premises. It has been delayed too
long already.

Juch Opera C'ipnny.
From the cast given for the per
f ormance of the Opera Faust by the
Juch Grand Opera Company, and the
necessary preparations which the
stage of the opera house is undergo
ing for the reception of the scenery
and properties required for the opera,
it is safe to predict one of, if not the
grandest productions of opera ever
seen in Raleigh
The arrival in New York on Tues
day, Sept. 15th of Signor Enrico Hev
ignani (From Covent Garden, Lou
don) who is the Musical Director aud
First Conductor of the Company, was
an occasion for rejoicing among the
musical fraternities of the Metropolis
Such an acquisition as Slg. Bevignani
to the musical interests of America
will undoubtedly receive merited recognition.
Is Money Scarce.
No reason is better why you should
trade at Swindell's. You know as truly
as the sun is in the heavens that Swin
dell sells goods cheaper than any
house in Raleigh,therefore you should
take no chances by trading at some
other place. We hive a lot of chil
dren's copper tipped peble goat shoes
at 86 cents a pair; you must pay 6
cents for these shoes unless you get
them at Swindell's. We have a lot of
ladies long cloaks at $3:50, 4:00 an l
$5:00 which are worth twice the mon
ey. We have men's heavy under
shirts at about half what others ask
for them. We are selling carpeting
at prices no one else, will or can sell
them, and taking all things together
you will save nt least one third of
your money by trading at
Swindell's
The condition of M. B. B.trbee, Esq,
