The street cars resumed their trips this afternoon. All right Mayor Badser is having rather a dull time in the matter of cases. The city is unusually quiet. Don't forget that the King's Daogh ters will open their bazar on tomor row. There yon will find all the fancy toys, fancy articles, confections, etc. The elevator at the establishment of Messrs. W. H. ft R. 8. Tucker, is working to perfection and is most convenient. The trees and shrubbery in the capitol square are being nicely trimmed. Now take away the old arsenal building and all will be well. Rev. J. W. It should be promptly done. We notice that Mr. W. M. Pickett, well known in this section, has ad vertised his Pee Dee River planta tion in Anson county for sale, on the 22d of Dec. 1891: It Is valuable prop erty and ought to bring a good price. Although the sheriff is allowed by law to collect costs on taxes unpaid the 1st December, yet none will be charged until after the 18th. The sheriff has generously made this offtr on aceouLt of the scarcity of money. Gall up and settle. A temporary suspension of travel on the street railway has been caused by some disarrangement of the pump ing equipment at the power house. The defect will be remedied as soon as possible. It will be opened on the 10th at tie State National Bank buil'iing The ladies have all sorts of pretty things for Christmas, good candies a spe cialty; prices reasonable. Be sure to call before you get your Christmas presents. Wilmington has just opened a Young Mens Christian Association building which cost $40,000. It is one of the handsomest buildings of the kind in the South. Can't our Raleigh people take the matter in hand and get up a suitable building. We need it. The County Commissioners have adjourned until the 16th inst. The bonds of all the county officials have been satisfactorily renewed. The Ral eigh and Gaston Railway has been given until the 29th, for a hearing re lative to the tax charges against then, an d the sheriff has been direc ted not to collect the taxes unlit that time. The President's message was re ceived in this city over the wires of the Western Union office, between the hours of 3 and 6 o'clock this morn log It contains about 9000 words. This is fast work, and we learn that the efficient force of operators handled it with great credit. The question of a centennial cele bration in Raleigh next year is fast gaining friends. We fail to note a single instance where any of our prominent citizens have been ap p roach ed on the subject and met with an adverse opinion, it is a question of much interest to our people. Let us hope that the matter will not be allowed to slumber. Can't the mat ter be inaugurated by the Board of Aldermen? It should be done at once. "Faust" is the great attraction at Metropolitan Hall tonight. Be sure to attend the Grand pera tonight. The Christmas horn is already be ing heard in the land. A warm wave is expected tomorrow or next day. The President's Message will prob ably appear tomorrow. Another dormitory is to be built at the Agricultural and Mechanical Col lege. The liquor dealers of this city have announced that they will not sell spirits on ChristmaB day It is stated that Col. Polk will not appoint a secretary in place of Mr. H. W. Ayer at present. Take your dinner tomorrow at Moseley's old stand. The Tabernacle ladies will wait on you. Yesterday afternoon Judge Sey mour set aside the ve diet rendered by the jury in the case of A. W. Shaf fer vs. Edwards & Broughton. The" case will come up again at the next term. Messrs. Edwards & Broughton state that in 1887 they employed Mr T. C. Harris to make them a street map of the city for their City Direc tory, and they had ro knowledge of any infringement of copyright. Tliompaoo, Esq vVe deeply regret to announce the death of this old and well known cit izen of Wake county, which occurred at his home, in Wake Forest town ship last Monday night, a.ed eighty eight years. Mr. Thompson was perhaps as weli known us any citizen of our county, and during his long and eventful life has occupied many positions of honor among his fellow men. For some years he represented Wake county in t he General Assembly, and was known as a most earnest debater. He was the uncle of Messrs. Jno W . and J. 0. Oyster Supper and Clipping Party. The ladies of the Good Shepherd Church will give an oyster supper and "clipping party" at the residence of Rev. Today about 12 o'clock, two young colored men named Toby Davis and Isham Wimbush,' tarted out hunting, when near Eledsoes' grove Wim bush's gun was accidentally discharged the load entering the right arm of Toby Davis lacerating the must be very much. Marshal rector of the church After the marriage, a formal reception was held at the residence of Mrs Grimes, on Halifax street, which was largely attended. Miss Mary Pescud, ,who has been absent for several months, has return ed much improved in health. Mr. John B Broadfoot, of Fayette ville, is in the city. Gov. Holt went to Charlotte, yes terday afternoon to attend the mar riage of his niece, Miss Claude Holt, to Mr. Robt. Oates. Our little friend Tommy Lumsden one of the messengers at the Western Union Telegraph office, is confined at his home with sickness. We are pleased to learn that Mrs Col. A B. Andrews, who has been quite sick, is improving. The mild winters for the past three years have had the effect of greatly multiplying the rabbits in Montgom ery county, Iud , and tHey are doing untold damage to fruit trees, bushes and crops. Farmers are going out in bands and putting in whole days ex terminating the pests. A four side march hunt has occurred in Ripely towns-hip, ia which over 1,601 rabbits were killed. The winning side killed 538 in the afternoon drive Similar drives are being participated in all over the section. Uussell Sage Dying. Nkw York, Dec. 7. It is reported that Russell Sage is dying from the effects of his scare in the recent ex plosion that occurred in his office last Friday.
