Christmas in the air. The shortest days in the year now. The market is crowded with all the good things of life. The Christmas horn is now the all raging music of the day The eity has never been so quiet at this season of the year. Remember the poor and give them something. Large crowd of country people in the city today. Many of the young ladies of the female schools in this city, will go to their homes for the holidays. Quite a large sale of property took place in front of the court house to day.! Christ church and the Church of the Good Shepherd are being beauti fully decorated for Christmas day. The street carts are doiug good service today in hauling off trash from the streets. An auction is in progress at the Bazar of the King's Daughters this afternoon. Many useful articles are being sold. It is a source of pleasure to know that all our State departments aie conducted in first class order. "No flies" on any of our officials. Lookout for sneak thieveB, burg lars, etc. This is their peculiar sea son and people cannot be too par tioular. The Raleigh Tobacco Board of Trade wi I take the usual Christmas holidays from tomorrow until Jan nary 4th, 1898. And now Col. A. B. Andrews has been appointed First Vice President of the B & D. system. Our congratu lations go out heartily to him The grippe Is said to be on the in crease, but it is gratifying to say that the type is unusually mild in this section. But for the prevalence of the grippe, this would be a gay and happy Christ mas. We most make the best of it. however. Don't fail to see the "Pay Train'" at Metropolitan Hall tonight. For scenic effect it is ahead of anything ever seen in Baltigh. All who defrire to witness a first class performance should not fail to be on hand at Metropolitan Hall to night. The play itself is first class, and the scet io features are splendid. McK.ee Encampment, No. 15, will hold a special netting this evening at 7:80 o'clock for the purpose of elec ting officers and the transaction of other important business. GhO. L. Tobhckfski, Scribe. A merchant said today that his local specials in the Visitor had paid him ten fold. He declares it to be the best investment he had made this year. The new Union Depot is beginning to assume most beautiful proportions. In point of architecture it will be one of the foremost buildings of the kind in the Southern States. The State Treasurer has received from the Pullman Palace Car Com pany the amount of the tax assessed by the Railroad Commission upon their property in North Carolina. The value of this property is $180,000. This will help out North Carolina's strong box considerably. On carrier boys will be around to morrow afternoon and Christmas day with their annual bow to the pub lic in the shape of a Christmas ad dress. These lads have been as faith folas they could in serving oar pat win a rinrlnir the Dast year, and any substantial appreciation will be grate fully received by them. Uh rial in as Tree. The officers and teachers of the In stitution for the deaf and dumb and t e blind are getting up a Chiietmas tree for the pleasure of the children who cannot go home for the holidays. The San Antonia conference rela tive to the Inter State Exposition is now near at hand, and, so far, no ao tion has been. taken to have Ra'eigh reoreseuted. What are our city ath cr's going to do about this matter. Does It mean that we do not want the permanent exposition, and will make no effort for it ? Prize Announcement. At the contest for the best loaf ot bread made with Sugar Coated Yeast on Tuesday, Dec. 22d, Mrs. T. Q. Jen kins was awarded the prize of $5.00. There were ten loaves presented, and all were of .excellent quality. Sugar Coated Yeast is now for sale by all grocers. The Broken Bank. W. S. O. B. Robinson, of Goldsboro, who has teen appointed receiver of the First National Bank of Wilming ton has instituted proceedings against H. M. Bowden, the missing Cashier, for the recovery of about $6,900. No tidings of Bowden has yet been re ceived. Jail Delivery. Yesterday afternoon about 3 o'clock a young man named Russell, em ployed by the Janitor went into the county jail at Oxford for the purpose of feeding the prieouers. As he did so five colored prisoners sentenced to the work house, overpowered him and made their escape. The names of the fugitives Pre Dick Jeffreys, Roger Yancey, Robt. Rowland, Jim Green, and Daniel Pollock. Pergonal Mention. Mr. C. F. King, correspondent of the Atlanta Journal is here. Ex Judge Bneed and Col. Meares and little eon George are down with the grippe. We regret to learn that Mrs. Eliza beth Holder is puite sick at her resi dence on South East street. V.AmAst.. the little son of Mrs. M. F. King is sick at her residence on north Dawson street. Mrs. James C. Birdsong, who has been quite sick is much better. Miss Florence Bindley. The New York Herald speaking of Miss Florence Bindley, who is the starof the great play, "The Pay Train," which appears at Metropoli tan Hall tonight, says r "She is a genius. She is equally at home in pathos or comedy; a vocalist worthy a leading position in Grand Opera; a dancing poet, as every step she takes is the poetry of motion; a face as beautiful as nature could make It, and one that no artist could do justice to ' i he Pay Train" is the most real istic comedy drama ever produced in this city. It is both exciting and thril ling, has mauy interesting situations and holds the audience In wrapt at tention. The mechanical effects are most cleverly executed and the. great wreck scene Is .wonderfully perfect, and decidedly realistic. The story is told n a terse style by the author, and the lines are enlivened by a vein of sparkling humor which runs thro' every scene. The cast is a most effi cient one and contains several capa ble artists. Headed by Miss Flor ence Bindley, who won favor from the first. She has a sweetly pretty face, a fascinating manner, a pleasant voice and fine dramatic talent. Useful and Ornamental. Christmas goods. The joint committee of the General Assembly for the purpose of examin ing the condition of our State Treas ury, has completed its labors. As might have been expected emry thing was found in first class shape. The balance of the educational fund on hand for the fiscal year ending No vember 80th, 1890, was $26,334.30 The balance of the pubi c fund for the same date was $137,342.55, making the total on hand at the commence ment of the fiscal year $163,676 85 The receipts of the educational fund for the year ending November SDth, 1891, was $26,589.63 and receipts of public fund for same time $1,161, 458 -09, making a total for the year of $1,183,047.72. The totol receipts on Nov. 30th, 1891,were II ,846,724.67. The disbursements, of the educational fund were 32,200.26, and of the public fund $1,152,894.37, a total of $1,185 -094.63. The balance of the educational and public fund on hand November 30th, 1891, was $161 629.94. One Cent Is the Word. Seven thousand times were we asked this morning if we were going to sell ladles felt hats at one cent eaeh on the first day of January next. Well, we never advertise anything we do not mean, and we shall sell ladies felt hats on Friday, Jan. 1st at one cent each from 9 to 12 o'clock in the forenoon. One cent, one cent, one cent each for ladies' felt hats. Yes, we know Dr. Wood has a room with barred windows, but we are not go ing there till after these hats are sold at one cent each.
