RALF.IGH.Jf.C ,DE ; -O, ISD1 The Navy Department hR an nonnced the wilingnesa of the Uni -ted States Government to furnish a vessel to carry brtadstuffs donated in this country for the relief of the starv ing peasantry of Russia. Tho Con stellation, now at Annapolis, has been designated for the service. She will carry 6C0 barrels of flour ; and was formerly used on a like occasion to carry f od to the famine stricken poop! of Ireland. The situation on the Mexican bor der might easily assume a trouble some aspect. The Garza movement in itself is not entitled to be dignified by the name of revolution ; the re cruits are picked up readily in Mexi co for any reckless cause in which there is a possibility of plunder. The business of our forces, State and Na tional, is of course simply to keep out trepassers ; and Texas alone will be quite competent to attend to that. Mr. Geo. N. Ives' Christmas ship ment of oysters was probably the largest one that ever left New Berne, says the Journal. It was upwards of 400 gallons and was distributed all over the State and as far as Atlanta. Some of the oysters were exceedingly fine so much so that they command ed $1 60 gallon. The outlaw Bob Sims, who with two foil wers was lynched by an Ala bama mob on Saturday night, had long cited the Bible in defense of every form of outlawry, end urged that it was the duty of Christians to defy the law. The people of Ala bama seem to have taken him at his word with a literalness which if not justifiable was certainly not very sur prising. Prcy Tight on Ih Fantastic Light Dr. Watkins, of New York, asserts that he has, by" the aid of a micro flash light, obtained negatives of the grip germ after it had been assimula ted with the flesh through the mu cous membrane of the nasal organs The germ, he says, is white and cov ered with fine hairs, and he adds that it attacks the blood rather than the membranes. This statement from a physician of repute and credibility sounds exceedingly specific ; yet the profession will be coy about accept ing negatives of a germ already as similated with the blood. A germ in the free raw state would command greater confidence. Family Life in Paris. Whole families iu Paris pack iDto flats of two and three rooms, out of which they always reserve a salon, which once a week is set out to re ceive visitors, but invariably closed to visitors on any other day, says Murray's Magazine. ''Madame est sortie," says the concierge, and no one is allowed to go up to the fifth, or even sixth floor where they nestle! They work incessantly, the mother eewing and mending, the daughters, perhaps, doing embroidery for the shops. At night they sleep anywhere; perhaps, in a corner of a dark pass age, screened off; the father or broth er on a "shake down" in the salon; the mother and another crammed in to a tiny cell, too small for one sleep er and intolerable for two. It is all dreadfully unwholesome, no doubt, especially as the whole is warmed by a pestilential ' Choubersky" stove, poisonous, but cbeap, and consequent- nol7 tf W. H.
