Over two hundred students were present at the opening of Chapel Hill University yesterday. We are pleased to learn that the prospects for the establishment of the Y. M. C. A. here, on a firm basis, are good. A department of elocution has been established at the State University, with Prof. L. R. Haroberlin, of Rich mond. Va. as instructor. The general tendency in this sec tion is for a considerable reduction in the acreage of cotton. More cereals are demanded. At New Orleans, seventy seven years ago to day Gen J a kson gave the British a terrible whipping. We oufrht to have celebrated the grand event. The Rescue Fire Co. has paid tb death claim to the widow of the late Mr. Frank Jones, who was a member of this company. The claim amount to f 80. The Railroad Commission has un der consideration the report to the Governor which, it is thought, wii! be ready soon. It is stated that the railroads, as a rule, are very prompt in settling matters in regard to which complaints are made. In this city, today at 12 o'clock, at the residence of her daughter, No. 806 Booth Person street, Mrs Mary Broughton, aged 79 years. Seven children survive her, four sons and three daughters. She was one of the original ten members who organ ized the Baptist Tabernacle Church, and the first one of the original ten who has gone to her reward. Hers was a sweet. Christian life, and her influence will long be felt in this com munity. The funeral will be held at the Tab ernacle Church tomorrow evening at 3 o'clock. Election. This play was recently rendered in Charlotte to a large and delighted au dience, f he Chronicle of that city says: "A Social Session" drew a good aus dience at the opera house last even ing. The play was fine. Without exception, this is the best farce com edy company that has appeared here this season. Every member is an art ist of merit The music is catchy, songs new, and there are no waits. The loeal hits on the whiskey ques tion were clever and the entire enter tainment first class."
