VOL. XXVI. RALEIGH, TUESDAY, JANUARY 19, 1892. NO. 74 NEWS NOTES ABOUT THE CITV. What Our reporters g e and Hear Worth Giving to Our Readers News in Brief. Gen. Lee's birth day. "Starlight" at Metropolitan Hall to night. The Revenue collections in this district, for the past year, were $989, 767.59. "Where are you going, my pretty maid." Go to Metropolitan Hall to night, and hear Miss Jarbeau sing it. Judge Winston in a letter to the Biblical Recorder advocates a refors matory for boys Right. The Baldwin Belville Company will appear here in a three nights engage ment, commencin? on Thursday the 91st inst. Last Saturday night the Verooua Jarbeau Company played in WiU mington, to the intense delight of the audience. There will be a meeting of Raleigh Council, Royal Arcanum at the office of Jones & Powell this evening at 7:39 o'clock. Let the ladies turn out in force to night and see Miss Jarbeau at Metro--politan Hall. The play is splendid and the costumes elegant. The prospects for the erection of a public building, in Durham, are most encouraging. The measure will no doubt be passed at an early day. Give us a new city clock. We want one that comes something like strike ing the right time. The present con cern i6 a real "bell" deceiver. The stamp collections, at Durham, for the past eek have been $10 911, 26, and yet there is a hesitancy about giving our neighbor a government building. It is a shame. In pursuance of the order made by Judge Conner, the board of County Commissioners of Vance County, last Saturday, met and granted liquor li cense. On and after tomorrow, the pas senger coaches heretofore attached to trains No. 6'3 and 63, local frei ,'hts on the North Carolina Railroad, will be discontinued. Reddick Rritt a colored boy was ar rested today for stealing a nickel watch from a young man'named Wm. Hartsfleld on Martin street. The case came up before the Mayor at 5 o'clock this afternoon. Regular communication of Raleigh Chapter No 10, will be held at 7:30 o'clock tonight. V'ork ro. the Mark Masters degree. Every member re quested to I e present. Mr. H. A. It is causing rain in the Atlantic States and snow in the Mississippi valley. The severest cold wave of the sea son is moving down from the north west, the temperature being below z ;ro over Iowa and Kansas. The cold wave will reach the Atlantic states probably Wednesday evening. Local forecast for Raleigh and vi ciaity : on Tuesday rain, becoming colder tonight, rain may change to mow before morning. Mayor's Court. ; A young white man named J. T. ' Alexander was up for carrying a con cealed weapon; charge not proven and case dismissed. An Auditorium. There can be no mistaking the tone of public sentiment in Raleigh, on the subject of an auditorium, or a building of such dimensions as to ac commodate the large crowds that oc casionally attend on .certain pub lic occasions It is conceded that in this respect, our city is behind others of its size. In fact we are sadly de fective. We speak advisedly when we assert that we have been given the go by, by some of the best com panics of theatrical performers, as well as amusements of other kinds, owing to the inadequate hall arrange meats at command. We had hoped that the scheme proposed some time since, by some of our municipal of ficials would have been carried out before now, but, it appears that there are legal drawbacks which will pre vent anv action in that direction. It will therefore be incumbent upon some private enterprise to start the movement, it' it is carried out. In this connection, we must think that the time is not far distant when some of our citizens of means will be con vinced that the scheme will present such favorable aspects as to ensure pecuniary success. Opera houses, or auditoriums have certainly proven successes in other places, and, surely there should be no good reason, why Raleigh, the capital of the State should be an exception. We hope the matter will not be &U lowed to slumber. With the other improvements that now appear will crown the present year, let there be added a fine opera house or audi torium. ' It will be in keeping with tho march of progress, that is every where visible in our beautiful city. Little Rock. Vernona Jarbeau and her splendid company were introduced to a large audience at the Capital Theater last night. No attraction has been here this season that has aroused so much enthusiasm or provoked so much laughter as this excellent aggregation of artists. The performance of the company, taken collectively or indi vidually, pleased e very part of the house. The applause was spontaneous and continuous. "Starlight" is a musical farce comedy, exactly what the bill proclaims it to be. Nobody cares what the plot is, and if he did, he would never have time to either analyze or understand it, for his at tention would be too busily occupied in laughing at and applaudiug the specialties of the performers. Jarbeau was suffering last evening from a severe hoarseness which interfered somewhat with her singing, but even with this handicap she pleased and delighted her auditora. Her style is original, and to compare her work with that of some other soubrette, one must wait until she has an imita tor competent to excel her in her specialties, and none such has yet ap peared on the American stage. She is a very graceful dancer, has a i! harming voice and possesses a great deal of comedy talent of a character farabote those who gradaate from the variety stage and embark into the legitimate channels of the profes sion There is nothing about her work that needs fumigation Every member of her company does some thing creditable during th perfor mance that demands an encore. Everybody who witnessed the enter tainment last night went away de lighted. This company will appear at Met-X ropolitan Hall tonight. The R. and D. Takes Dare of the Ministers. Ministers' permits over the Rich mond and Danville Railroad for 1891, are extended -and made good until Jan. 81, 1893, by which time thejaew permits for 1892 will be issued and in the hands of our clergy.
