Were half the power that fills the mind with terror, And half the wealth bestowed on camps and and courts, Given to redeem the human mind from er ror, There were M ned of arsenals and forts. The warrior's name would be a name ab horred, And every nation that should lift again, Its hand against its brother, on its forehead Would wear for evermore the corse of Cain. Down the dark future, through long gener ations, The echoing sounds grow fainter, and then cease; And like a bell, with solemn, sweet vibra tions, I hear orce more the voice of Chri't, say "Peace !" A Mammoth Stamp. California Fruit Grower. Long before the advent of the white man in California, forest fires raged, and from recent discoveries it is prob ably that giant trees were thus de stroyed, in comparison to which our much lauded sequoias and redwoods of the present are but saplings. In 1849 Commodore Apetsby Jones, U. 8. N., established a small saw mill in the Mill Valley lor the purpose of getting out lumber, there being no saw mills on tbe coast at the time. A few remnants of this old mill still re main, the locality being about six miles from Sausalito on the .North Pacific coast railway. CIobb by this mill there can today be plainly traeefl the outline of a tree destroyed by tire, perhaps ages ago. The stump still measures fifty two feet in diameter, and from appearances perhaps once measured full sixty feet. Around this mammoth stump had grown immense trees, which were cut ami used in the saw mill in 1849. fince then a third growth has been made, the sight of which wool'' make glad the heart of any lumberman. The stump was measured lately by Edward A. T.Gallagher, the pioneer, who lost his reputation for veracity in 1819, when bis description of the acquoias of California was published in the eastern papers, in which the statement was made that his em ployes had driven a wagon and a yoke of oxen through a proetrate tree that was burned hollow, and they would drive for 100 feet and "gee off" and go through a knot hole. At tbe same time the statement was made that he had felled a tree 17 feet in diameter and had used the hollow of one that was standing in which to stable 13 head of horses. California Fruit Grower.' ' A HUMAN BODY FOUND IN THE ICE. . St. Lotjib, Mo., Jan. 19. A human body formed part of the ice gorge in the. river in front of the city, and was only found yesterday. It was identi fled 88 that of W. C. Sproule, a sales man In the employ of Bam'l C. Davis & Co He evidently attempted to cross the river t u the ice before it be came heavy, broke through, and un able to regain the surface, by reason of the swift tcufrent, braced himself in the hole he had made and thus met death from expomre. This is gathered from the position of the body, which was braced, with the feet on the t ge of an old hole, since frozen over, and the back of the neck at the. opposite edge. Axes had.to be used and it was sometime before the body was released. The coroner's verdict waB death trom exposure. faslena Tor Infanta and Children Castoria promotes Digestion, and , rcomes Flatulency, Constipation, dour I uach Diarrhoea, and Feverishness. ihut the child is rendered healthy and its sleer natural, Castoria contains no Morpbine or other narcotic property "Caetoria is so well adapted to children that I recommend it as t verier to any prescript""!
