NO. 81
MEWS NOTES ABOUT THE CITY.
What Our Reporters 8 e and
Hear Worth Giving lo Our
Readers News In Brief.
Another cold wave struck as last
night
It don't look eo much like war to
day, still it's Chilli.
There was a large number of conn
try people in the city yesterday.
The market was well supplied tot
day with poultray.
Everything quiet in the mayor's
court today.
The street car force seems to be
pushing things. They will soon have
the Bargett street line completed.
The relief committte will be glad
to receive tome funds to help supply
the denial ds upon them for wood.
The thermometer ac Williams &
Haywood's drug store, registered 22
degrei s this morning at 7 o'clock.
Now they say it will be about March
1st before the new engires for the
electric power house will arrive.
Bev. J. B. Hurley, the pastor of
Central M. E. Church, is rapidh
gaining in favor with his congrega
tion.
Efforts are being made to get the
woman that was so badly burned,
in the hospital, which is hoped will
be done.
Mr. Eugene Mitchiner, son of Geo
Mitchiner, Eeq , and Miss Evie Toms
linson, both of this county, were mar
riedMhis afternoon.
Over a thousand pestt ftces out of
the twelve hundred that make their
rtport of funds to the Baleigh office
have already done so.
A. J. Davis & 06., merchants at
Pernell, this ccunty, made an assign
ment to L. Woodlief assets and liabil
ities both small.
The alarm of tm last night was on
ly a small affair. The top of a colored
man's bouse on Etist Cabarrus it reel,
caught ant was soon extinguished.
The work of raising the street rail
way rails on Blount street is beta
done so that the street may be prop
erly raised In the center.
The trolly wires have been put uj
on West Bargett street and now it
looks-es though we shall soon have a
cross line of the street cars connecting
at Bargett and Fayetteville streets.
Grant Bridgerc, a colored man,
while cutting some feed forthe stock
at Mr. F. L. Stephenson's, this coon
ty, had his band so badly lacerated
that amr utation may be necessary.
Tonight after the regular prayer
meeting services at Edenton Street
Methodist Church there will be held
an important meeting of the ladies
of that congregation, at which a mat
ter of interest is to be considered. All
the ladies of the church and congre
gation are requested to attend.
Col. Thomas H. Sutton formerly
of Fayetteville but now of Winston,
N. C , will represent the stockholders
of the broken People's National
Band of Fayetteville this week in
the prosecution of E. F. Moore, the
ex-President, on the grave charge of
obtaining money under false pre
tense. ' Si Plunkard" (a Yankee comedy,)
which appears Friday night, is said
to be a very amusing performance
being a genuine comedy. There is
just enough plot to lend interest and
tell a pretty story The comedy is of
a refined nature, and does not depend
on the use of brick baB, stuffed clubs
and stale minstrel jokes to amuse
Mr J . C. Lewis, who assumes the title
role, ha a very peculiar droll dialect,
and should make a good Si, Many
pleasing specialties are introduced
Realism is seen in the shape of a real
threshing machine, in full operation
on the stage. The band and orches
tra that is carried by Mr. Lewis, is
considered the finest with any travel
ing company.
Perhaps the reported scarcity o
ater in Chicago may have influenced
the Democratic National Committee
in making its decision. Political
conventions have very little use for
water.
It is reported that a young gentle
man from Chapel Bill was married
yesterday to one of Wake's fair
daughters from Buckhorn township.
The marriage was a postponement
from Saturday.
Two sheriffs Fettled with the Stale
Treasurer yesterday. Sheriff J. W.
Suggs, of Stanly, paid in $4,59177.
and Sheriff W. B. Love, of Craven,
$9,789.49.
A gcod opportunity to buy a first
rate delivery wagon will be offered
by Yancey & Btronach on Saturday
at their auotion rooms. Also horses,
mules and other property. See their
notice in anot column.
It was a crusty old bac elor who
said that the 500,000 who signed the
peace petition sent to Congress did
so because of their fear that the kill
ing of a few thousand men might re
duce their chances of getting one
There are women, not a thousand
miles from this office wh'o would glad
ly sign a petition for war, if they
could thereby get rid of the man they
have been unfortunate enough to get
possession of.

Last night at 9 o'clock at the rest
dence of the bride's mother, Mr. D.
Shelley Swain to Miss Add ie C. Rayle,
both of this city. Rev. J. B. Burley

welcome, consequently "Vick's Floral
Guide". is sure of a warm reception,
especially when dressed as daintily as
this year. The "Nellie Lewis" Car

"Brilliant Poppies" on the back, are
unusually attractive, and the numer
ous colored plates of flowers and veg
etables are certainly works of art and
merit. The first ' twenty four pages,
printed in violet ink, describe novel
ties and specialty s. Send ten cents
to James Vick's Sons, Rochester, N.
Y , and procure a copy of this attract

. .
Would make a Good Wife.
" I was thinking, sir," he said, as he
hesitated at the door of the old gen
tleman's private office, ' that per
haps I'd like to marry your daugh
ter." " A noble girl," said the old gentle
man, reflectively. " I don't know
how I can spare her, bet I suppose
I'll have to some time.
"Tes, sir; quite right, sir, and I'd
like to have her, except except you
know I'm not rich, sir."
4 I know it," replied the old gentle
man, " but you are drawing a fair
salary, and I don't require wealth."
" I'm glad of that, sir, hut I was
sort of thinking that that she isn't
experienced in household matters."
"She isn't," hi id the old gentle
man, but she's a wonderfully ob
serving girl."
' Yes, sir, and I think a great deal
of her, but if I take her to a home of
her own I'm afraid, sir I'm afraid it
would be hard, very hard. She was
educated for a rich man's wife and
wouldn't know ."
" You're partly right," interrupted
the old gentleman. " But let me tell
yon something about that glri. She
went to my closet a couple of days
ago to get something that was there,
and there was a pair of trousers hang
ing near the door."
" Yes; what of it?"
" One of the suspender buttons was
gone."
"And she she ". The young
man was agitated he could not finish
the sentence.
I " bbe noticed it," said the old gen
tleman. " Noticed it herself ?" .
" No one had said a word to her
about it."
"But she -she didn't-"
"Yes, she did. She sewed that
button on "
"Please, sir, say; yes,' "pleaded
the young man, " and and if she'll
have me let us name a day in the
near future. And grant me one other:
favor."
"What is it ?"
"Don't, please dou't let any other
young man know about that button
until after the wedding. I don't want
to take any chances "
