The question of a new station house is one that will not down. It is im peratively demanded by the people and the Board of Aldermen should lose no time in havirg another one suitable to the wants of the times. At the special meeting of the Board of Aldermen held last Saturday after noon the matter of purchasing a steam street roller, as recommended by the committee, was thoroughly discussed, but no final action was taken. It was postponed until the next monthly meeting 1 the board. Messrs. 8 & D.Berwanger announce today that the final stock has been taken and they have d termiuel to give their customers the benefit of the goods left over. This is one of the rarest aud best chances to obtain bargaii.s th it ha ever been present ed in Raleigh. Call and make your selections We have heard a desire expressed that tbe Leazor and Pullen Societies of tbe Agricultural aud Mechanical College may soon have another enter tainment in the way of discussion. Although there was a considerable crowd in attendance at the late speaking, the inclement night pre vented the attendai ce of man) who otherwise .would like to have been present. By common consent tbif is the birth day of George Washington, known in history as the "Father of his Coun try." Iu the family records, how ever, it says, "George Washington was born on ye 11th of February, (0. S ) 1732. From some cause or other, of which we are not definitely in formed, the date is placed February 82nd, and such is, it seems univer sally acknowledged At any rate he was born aud by his valor and self sacrificing devotion secured to us the great boon of liberty and indepen dence. Above all he decliued a third term for tbe presidency, thereby es tabiishing such a precedent that even r 1 . , . 1 111. . . uren. urrano, v,iLn an nis laueis was unable to ovethrtw Peace to his ashes. He will live in the memory of mankind forever. Died. On yesterday. February 21st, at the residence of his father, in Mark's Creek township, Wake county, Mr. Buddie 1 ouse, about 23 yea"B of age, of consumption He wax the son of T. W. House and was a most worthy young man Dixon and Ingcrsoll Rev. A C. Dixon, a North Caro linian and a brother of Rev. Thomas Dixon has gotten into a difficulty with Col Robert ingersoll. An ex change bays: "Iu a sermon recently Mr. Dixor., in speaking of the sending of obscene literature through the mails, alluded to one case in which a man was ar rested for the off nse and that Col. Ingeraoll appeared as counsel for the defendant, and added that Col Iu gersoll was paid to po'lute the minds of the young. Col. Ingersoll wrote him a private letter in which he de mi nded a public retraction of the words used and if this was not done he would begin an action against Mr. Dixon for criminal libel Mr. Dixon does not seem inclined to retract and there will te a suit for libel, we presume. i An Auditorium. Our esteemed contemporary, the Charlotte Jiews says: Just one year ago this month, work on Charlotte's big auditorium was commenced. Space this building was finished, the wonder has been thtt Charlotte was ab'e to do without it for no long a time. It was dedicated by the great music festival. Follow ing that were the Fife meeting, the armory bazaar, the Sam Jones meet ings and the political meetings. It proved more than equal to everv occasion. It is just the thing for the State convention, no doubt about that. We publish this merely to show that our Charlotte friends fully realize the importance of an improve ment, for which Raleigh is dtill suf fering. It mr.st be conceded by every observant person, that if an audi torium proves a convenience in Char lotte, it certainly would be in RaU eigh, the capital of the State, where there is always some large assemblage. We hope the experience of Charlotte may soon be felt in Raleigh There is no time to lose. Personal mention. We regret to state that Capt. S. A. Ashe is quite sick. The health of Justice J. J. Davis, of the Supreme Court, is improving. We regret to learn that Mr. 8. L. Arendell continues very ill. Robin Seawell, the old colored man injured by the falling of a house on Bledsoe's plantation last Friday night, is improving. Accid nt. Yesterday (Sunday) morning about 11 25 o'clock, when near the residence of Col. A. B. Andrews, on Blount street, the motor apparatus of one of the street cars became detached and fell heavily to the ground causing a sudden stoppage. The shock was so great as to throw the motorman, Mr. Chas. Wrenc, against the car railing bruising him considerably. Mr. Reavis, the conductor, was not hurt. The accidert was not caused in any manner from the power machinery, or in any way connected with it. There were no passengers on board at the time. Handsome Shade Trees Cheap. Burke, a prominent farmer of Chatham county, which occurre I a few days since at a government dis tillery. In company with several other gentlemen, Mr. Burke was look ing through the distillery when he became sick, his head swimming from the bad odor of bad whiskey, fell over into a slop tub and when taken out he was dead, The only dry place about him being the back of his bead. Mr. Burke was a consistent christian and never tasted a drop of whiskey. He leaves an excellent wife and a family of fourteen children, seven boys and seven girls. Mr. Burke was in his 78th year. Old Bonds. When it is considered, that tbe old bonds of the State, the funding of which are provided for under the "act to compromise and settle the State debt," do not carry interest, it would seem to be an act of fully that the holders do not come forward and have them exchanged. The hope that any better terms will be given is a fallacious one, and as the terms of the act expire in July next, there is no assurance I hat they will be exten ded. There are still a quarter of a million of . dollars of these bonds out. Their surrender would be not only a source of benefit to the owners, but of much convenience to the chief financial officer of the State in properly estimating the bonded in debtedness of the State. We have earnestly called attention to this matter on several occasions, because we believe it to be one of much in terest to all concerned. j A Large Shoo Store in a Dry (jioods House.
