The Duke and Black well factories in Durham wer closed yesterday in honor of Washington's bin lid y. JJon't forget the " Castaways," at M etiopolitsu Hall tonight. It is one of the best plays now on the road. T here should be a crowded house. There wa a Flight increase in the receipts . f cotton in this city todaj There is no improvement in prices, however. The founds' 'oi for another lar e cotton factory has been cominnee. at Haw River. It will be called th "Cottania" Mills. The statement is made that most of the counties in Not th Carolina are ia a good financial condition, and their warrants are generally cashed on their face value. This is a first rate showing.. The air is full of all kinds of rumors relative to journalistic changes and counter changes, about all of which we are not well enough in formed, at this writing, to give any definite information. A grand excursion to Norfolk on the , occasion of the launching of the "Raleigh" should now be discussed. Let it be arranged a such low rates that all our people, who desire to at tend, can do so. Two literary halls have been ar ranged at Rutherford College, of which one is named the "Johnston Hall" in honor of Col. Wm. Johnston, of Charlotte, and the other the "Dnke Hall," in honor of R. N. Duke, of Durham. The great attraction for next Mon day night ;9th inst, will be i'luBtra tions in tableau from characters in the celebrated novel "Ben Hnr." It will be an occasion of unusual in terest, and doubtless a large crowd will be in attendance. Fall particulars hereafter. Now that we have been bo highly honored by the Secretary of the Navy, in having a United Btates Cruiser named "RaleigV' we hope ttiat ar rangements will be made, at such cheap rates, that nearly all our peo -pie will be able to go to Norfolk to Vitness the event. Complimentary. Last Friday evening an "En Masque ' Party" was given at Oxford by Mrs. ! J. A. White, complimentary to Miss Mildred McPhf etera.of Raleigh. Nor wood arouu here is making a real first class 5c cigar and our people all like them. Call on your dealer for them. fe23,26,27,mr8,4,5 Attention is di-cted to the adver tisement of Mr. C. H Anderson who is now in receipt of a splendid line of ladies and misses shoes, the equal in all respects of anything of the kind that has ever been seen in this mar ket. Call and examine his stock. The Chamber of Commerce.of Char lotte, gave "Joe Caldwell" a reception upon entering on bis duties as editor of the Chronicle. We know our friend "Joe" blushed at the compliment. His ma jesty is only equalled by his ability. A delighted audience greeted the Harry Lindley Company at Metros politan Hall last night. The perform ance was in all respects good each and every member of the company com ing fully up to expectations. To night the beautiful play of "The Castaways" will be performed. It is a most attractive performance and we hope there will be a crowded house. Personal Mention. LoUa. the little daughter of Mr. F. A. Watson, who has been quite sick, is much better. Mrs. S. T. Morgan, of Durham, is in the city visiting relatives. Miss Ella Riddle, who has been visiting friends in Durham, has re turned to the city. Q.)v. Holt .left today for the New Be mo Fair. Mr. 0. S. Harris, who has been spending sometime in Rutherfordton, has returned to the city. A Great Occasion. Gov. Holt has received a letter of date the 20th inst., from Hon. B. F. Tracy, Secretary of the Navy, an nouncing that early in April next the United States cruising ship 'Raleigh,' now building, at Norfolk, will be launched, and requesting that Mrs. A. W. B a) wood, the Governor's daughter shall perform the ceremony of chiistening the vessel. To this Gov. Holt has replied accepting the proposal as to Mrs. Haywood, and also announcing that he will be pres ent also. 1 his will be a grant event, not only to Raleigh, but the State of Norfh Carolina as well. It becomes us to acknowledge the high compliment in a manner unmistakable as to our ap preciation, not only by a very large attendance of our people, but by the presentation of such an offering as will add eclat to the occasion. We take it for granted that upon the an nouncement of the precise date the Board of Aldermen of the city will make such arrangements as neces sary. It will indeed be a great occasion., r J. W. Evans, the carriage ma ker, corner of Blount and Morgan streets, has just received and put in use a unique and very effective little machine in the shape of a patent tire shrinker vbich is a great labor saver. A meeting of the World's Fair Com mittee for North Carolina, met here yesterday at which reports from com mittees were read. Mr. T. K. Bruner gave a most excellent account of his work in the west, stating that he had succeeded in obtaining the most valuable information and that the outlook was encouraging. He sue ceeded in arranging contracts for various species of trees, etc. Messrs. P. M. Wilson, Biuner and Prof. Holmes left for the New Berne fair today. Morehnad. From all reports, it would seem that the fishing at Morehead is now better than for many years past. The Wilmington Star gives an account of two boys who went out and in one tiiUB letting down their net caught as many as their boat could hold. They pulled the net ripht in without stopping to take the fish out of it un til they reached the wharf, and were back in two hours from the time they left it with fifty five dollars worth of trout. Forty or fifty boats were out, and as a rule as soon as they hauled in the first net full they had no room for apy more, and in some instances would have to make their way back with dispatch in order to retain all they had caught and yet keep from sinking.
