The term self rsp -at is too fr quently a iuiuiMner in its ordinar use. We heard the f uhj ct dir.cased just a little, yesterday, under fie name of pride first and then it wa ! decided that self respct i? a b -tter , term At first blush we regarded th-; decision as correot, but on reflection we have concluded that pride, as commonly lued, is the term. Pride, in short, is an over estimate of self", and nearly all. if not all, are gnilty of this. Self respect, strictls speaking, is the inner estimate our own con sciousness places upon our acts and professions. A man truly to have self respect must necessarily possess an inward consciousness of perfect in tegrity of purpose. Otherwise he cannot truly respect himself. He may make s very loud profession, and he may be wonderfully profuse in his pro testations and all that, and he may demand that all men shall respect him, but ffhless he is conscious of in tegrity of purpose in all the out ward manifestations Of himself, he is obliged to feel that he is requiring more of other men than he can per form himself. That he is trying to pass for what he knows he is not. The man who has constantly to be informing the world around him of his own kindliness of spirit and of his large generosity; of how he loves to help the poor; feels so forgivingly toward his enemies, and all that, and yet finds himself annoyed whenever those he choses to call his enemies,!) re recognized or spo en of in a kind ap preciatlve way, thef green eyed mon ster has possessed him and he don't know it. True self respect is founded on what we know, in our honest hours, of our own motives; not what w, would have jthers to believe them to be, frequently. Self respect is re spect for self. ISaue. POINTS POLITICS AND PASTIME in his proclamation stating what the extra session of the Legislature of Texas would do, Governor Hogg omitted one thing that it is certain to do. That is to play on second thought we have concluded to leave it to you to say what. There must have been a few pri vates in the late war, although there is little in the recor'sof Congress to prove it. Representative Vincent Taylor, of Ohio, wishes to remove all doubts by erecting a $100,000 monu ment at Washington in honor of the private soldiers. Senator Gibson, of Maryland, has been losing time. A sneak thief Walked off with his wife's watch the other day. Chicago has not yet demanded an explanation of the House chaplain for his action ia publicly praying for divine protection for those who went on the Congressional excursion to that city. Some Presidential c udidates be lieve in assuming in public a modest mien, but is needless to say Senator Hid isn't one of that kind. Yes; it is just as well that those old Mexican battle flags should be sent back to that country. There are few things connected w ith the Mexican war, except the bravery of onr sol diers. that a patriotic American (should desire to be reminded of. II, Klenoe Perquim's.
