It is indeed the great em poriuin of fashion for North Carolina Yesterday morning Rev. Dr J. L Watkins preached his final sermon at the First Presbyterian Church to a very large congregation, from PhiU lipians 1 chapter and 18th verse. His serinon at night was from Matthew 18th chapter and 8th and 9th veises Both sermons were eloquent and touching. Dr. Watkins leaves next Wednesday for bis new charge in Spartanburg, 8. 0. We hear that mauv improvements are to be made to Brookside Park, for the spring aud summer season. It will be a most delightful n-sort. We heard a Uwver say today, that it consumed acoosiderable time, now, iu looking ip !nd titles, on account of the want of a new index book in the Register of Djels office. This is a matter that the commissioners should not longer overlook. It is a most important one to the people of the county, and the coBt would be money well spent. We are requested by Mr. A L Fer rell, 8ecr3tary of the Board of Health, to earnestly urge upon physicians and others, whoBe duty it is to make reports, that they do bo promptly by tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock, as this is the close of the fiscal year. Ir is much regretted that circum stances are such that? no action can betaken just no, for utilizing the Rex Hospital fund At least, we un derstand this to be the case owing to some difficulty iu disposing of cer tain property. That Raleigh needs an institution of the kind, and needs it badly, there is little if any, difference of opinion. We know that most of the cities hae such resorts, and we as the capital of the State should not be without one properly supported. St John's Ho pital, of course cannot be expected to fil the want, although it must be said, that it has accomp lished great good, and is still doing to We hope that some mode of utilizing the Rex fund may soon be determined, so that a long felt need foi our city may be accomplished. Mayor's Court. There was, what might be termed i a motley assemblage nf all colors, races, and we might add nationalities in attendance at the Mayor's office to day, drawn hither in expectation o' a sensational time for Hond ay morning. The case of Caroline Simmons vs. Presi'laandElizaWhitfield was called. Mr. Thos P. Devereux for State and J C L Han is for defendant. There were a large number of witness. The charge was using bad language last Wednesday week After a full bear ing, the Mayor concluded that there "was nothing iu it" and dismissed the case. Three Weeks More.
