There were lare crowds from Wash ington City and Baltimore in atten dance at the lauuch of the "Raleigh," yesterday. The "April fool dodge" was note-i gaged in to any great extent here to day. The custom is getting out oi date, or rather is becoming a stale chestnut. It is to be regretted that the force of hands dispensed with at the Ral eigh and Gaston Hhopu some time since, have not been restored. We hear it intimated to day, that the force would not be increased before next fall. The Commissioner of Agriculture is very desirious of securing the farm statistics for 1891. The returns so far, are not as full as they should be, and, in some instances the list takers have neglected the matter altogether. 1 his is important, and it should be promptly attended to. Bo famous has the reputation of our butchers become that thay fre quently receive orders for bi-ef, pork, etc., from the towns in the surround ing section. There are no better butchers anywhere than in Raleigh, and their stock is always fresh and fine. We were informed today by one of the most prig receive members of the Board of Aid '"men, that he had pre pared and wuuld probably, present tonight a resolution relative to the proper celebration of the centennial He says he wanted it understood that credit is due the Visitor for its prompt agitation of the matter. Thomas, Sec'y. , Board or Aldermen. This body meets tonight in regular monthly session. It would seem to i be a fitting occasion for some action locking to a proper celebration of our centennial. There seems to be a gen era desire among our people that the event should receive BOine proper at tention, and, if ho, it is best that the time for it should be definitely set. A celebration should not be rndertaken unless it is carried out with success. j and to do this, requires preparation. Every year a great many new families locate in ou; midst, and it is reasonable to think, that they will increase each succeed ing year These people often find difficulty in securing ho uses in propor tiou to their income Surely tho.-e who have capital should see the mutual benefit to be derived from investing in property of the kind It pays, both directly and indirectly.
