Regular winter weather has pre vailed in t he northwest the past few days, and we may look out for a cool spell here. The annual alumni address before the University Alumni Association at Chapel Hill, Thursday, May 81st, will be delivered 1 y President Charles D Mclver. "ThetCity Directory" is all the talk on the streets today, and there is a prospect for a full house at Metropol itan Hall tonight. Mr. D. T . Johnson makes an elabo rate display of cigars, pipes, chewing and smoking tobacco in one of his large front windows. With the switchback railway aua the skating rink at the fair grounds, the bath houses at Pullen Park and the various attractions to be fixed up at Brookside, Park, there will be no want of fun this summer, and a cor responding benefi' to the street cars. Gov. Bolt has ordered a special term of the Superior Court of Lin coin county, to commence May 23d and continues for tv. o weeks for th trial of criminal and civil cases. Th county commissiontiS reci mmendec the term. Judge John (i. Byoun will preside. Messrs- Neil A. Spence.E. A. Adame and H. T. Reaves left here this morn ing at 5 o'clock on bicycles for Golds boro. A telegram was received later in the day stating that they arrived there at 11:35 a. m. They remained there half an hour and then returned home. The advance premium list for field crops offered by the North Carolina State Agricultural Society has been sent out offering liberal premiums on cotton, tobacco, hay, grains and veg e tables generally. Our Messrs. R. H. Battle.the president, and B. W.Ayer, the secretary, are abreast of the times in the interest of the State Fair which will be held October 18 to 91. We were shown today the title page of the c usio composed and arranged by Mr. A. Pauli, complimentry to the cruiser "Raleigh." It isasfol Iowb: "The Raleigh March," com posed and dedicated to the United States cruiser Raleigh by A. Pauli, Raleigh, N. C, March 81st, 1892. It will be published soon by a Philadel phia house. Political elements are getting con siderably stirred up around here. All sorts of predictions and counter pre dictions are being made as to the success of the several candidates for public favor. The Vibitor is in a most comp'acent mode relative to such affairs. We are candidates for public favor in the line of increased subscriptions and advertisements. Our platform is the greatest good to the greatest number of our people of all persuasions. On this line we mean to fight It oat, if it takes all this stun juer and next, summer too. Cooler weather looked for tomor row. Radishes and some other rpring vegetables are making their appear ance in market. Mr. W. T Dough, of Dare county, has been ppointad by the Governor, a commissioner of wrecks. Much interest in being manifested here today, in the Rhode Island elec tion. It is expectei' to be a close con test. The latest accounts from Justice J. J. Davis are not of an encouraging character, tie is in a critical condi tion. The improvements upon the church of the Good Shepherd will consider, ably increase its size and add much to the improvement of the property. We learn that the contributions to the fond for the enlargement of the Baptist Tabernacle now amounts to about $1,90?. The Board of Aldermen have spoken The Executive Committee of the Agricultural Society have spoken. Now let the Chamber of Commerce meet the question. We mean the centennial question." Attention, Sir Knights ! You are hereby ordered to meet in your armory tonight at 8 o'clock for business and drill. J F. Brown, Sir Knight Guard. Tbe Charlotte Murder. The negro who murdered tbe po liceman James Moran, in Charlotte, was brought from Chester, B. O, to that city last Monday night. It was attempted to carry him to jail secret ly but the news spread and a large crowd congregated. Tbe prisoner was strongly guarded, however, and no attacks at violence had been made at last accounts. The Charlotte an thorities paid the expenses of the mrrdered man, and a fund is being m de up for his widow and children. Commuted. Yesterday afternoon Gov. Bolt commuted the sentence of Gilbert Dunlop, who whs to have been hung in Moore county, tlay 6th, for the murder of Bob Hoover, to imprison ment in the penitentiary for five years. There was strong evidence thac tbe criminal acted in self de fence, &c. Hints to Young Men. A very valuable and interesting lit tie pamphlet with the above title has been issued by the University. It contains practical suggestions how to get an education, what to study, and how to become speedily fitted for law medicine, journalism, teaching, business or agriculture. Any one can obtain a cop y by addressing Presi dent Winston, -Chapel Bill, N. C. PROMPT ACTIO. The Views of the Visitor En dorsed. At a meeting of the Executive Com mittee of the Agricultural Society held last night a committee was ap pointed to wait on the Board of Al dermen and tbe Chamber of Com mcrce, tendering to these bodies the co-operation of the society in the matter of the proposed centennial of tbe city of Raleigh, and suggesting that the occasion be made a special feature of the next State fair. Thus, has the Visitor's proposition received a cordial endorsement. Score another for the Vis'Tor. Russell's Comedians. In all probability "The City Direc- tory" by Russell's comedians, will be the last entertainment of the kind we shall have in Raleigh until next fall All who desires to witness a first class performance, should therefore be on hand at Metropolitan Ball tonight. It is beyond doubt the best company fhat V as performed here for years, especially in the comedy line. It is full of fun, wit and humor and wher ever it has performed the audiences have evinced their delight by storms of approbation. Do not miss such an opportunity for genuine pleasure. A Valuable Bok. The hand book of North Carolina now being prepared by Col. J no. D. Cameron for distribution at the World's Fair will contain three hun dred pages and there will be a supply of about twenty thousand copies. It will contain much valuable informa tion as to the manufacturing indus tries of the State, the trucking, fish and oyster business, etc. It is stated that Col. Cameron has reports from one hundred and eighteen cotton mills, and there are about ten now in oonrse of construction. J t will be a most interesting book. ttied. At bis residence on South Person street, this city, this morning at 10 o'clock, Mr. W. fl. Howell, aged 55 years. Mr. Howell has been afflicted for some time with kidney troubles which was the immediate cause of his death. He was a native of Wake county, having been born near Apex, but had been for serveral years a res ident of Raleigh. He was a member of the Baptist Tabernacle church and a consistent christian, highly re spected by all who knew him. Dur ing the war he served in the Confed erate army for the term of four years. He leaves a wife and six children a boy and five girls to mourn their loss, with whom we deeply sympathize. A Lovely Sight. There is nothing more beautiful, if properly arranged, than a nice show window in a first class dry goods es tablishment. In this respect, Ral eigh can now thke the lead of any city of its size in the country. We noticed today the artistic display of goods in the windows of Mr. D. T. Swindell, and to say that it is lovely can hardly express it. We doubt, even if in Broadway New York. there can be found a more elegant or a bet ter designed array of beautiful fab rics. In fact, it is a show worthy of the highest admiration and reflects credit upon Mr. Swindell, who thus proves that he is not only a Napole on in the way of selecting goods, but a first class artist in exhibiting them to the best advantage. We specially invite the ladies to call and see for themselves. There is enough in these vindows to attract the most fastidi ous purchasers If You Will chew or smoke I can suit you in price and qualify. I have on sale fifteen leading b rdB chewing tobacco, worth from 5c to 40c a plug, and smoking tobacco 25c to 50c per lb.
