J Davis. The office of the collector of inter nal revenue has been nicely fixed up The lovely weather today has brought out the ladles In full force. The North Durham pants factory has been organized with a capital of $50,1)00. Thirty convicts were sent to the State farms on the Roanoke yester day. The first weekly crop bulletin of the present year will be issued to morrow afternoon The mayor had an old time rest to day. Nothii'g to disturb his equauim ity.or to replenish the city treasury. Garden thieves are on the rampage at this season. A good yard dog would bo of use in most c. es. Old bonds to the amount of $244,800 were burned at the State Treasury yesterday. A large number of various flora plants are being ee. out in capito aquare. Some of the Sunday schools are al ready discussing the matter of excur sions. It will soon be said that the finish ing touches are being put on our new Union depot, so far as outside mat ters are concerned. The regular monthly reception of the Epworth League will be held from 8 to 10 o'clock this evening at Edenton Street M. E. Church. All Methodists invited. The health of Raleigh was never better at this season of the year. Most of the sickness reported is the result of the grippe. Attention is called to the special advertisement of Messrs Yancey St Stronaoh today, announcing impor tant sales tomorrow. The water in the fountain on Moore square is becoming stagnant. Attention is directed to the notice of Messrs. Leach St Andrews, who an nounce that they have disposed of their , interest in the ice business to the Hy genie Plate Ice Manufacturing Company. A farmer told as today, that if the fruit could successfully go through the danger of frost on the full moon of this month, be thought we would have the most abundant crop of pay for several years past. Mr Charles Wren had the mlsfor tune to lose his infant chi'd, which died at 8 o'clock this morning It was taken to Goldsboro on the ItM train this p. m. Rev. Geo. C. Needham and Rev. W. P. Fife will commence a series of lec tures on t!i- Bible, in Oxford, April lbth, to be conti. ued six days. Rev. Mr. Needham has for years been as sociated with Mr. Moody. Mr. Charles B. Scales, of New York, Is very ill at 601 Polk street, the resi dence of his sister, Mrs J. Watera. The meeting of the Ladies Board of Managers of the World's Fair, held at the Yarboro Houe, yesterday, was well attended, and the reports of the different circles were highly en oouraging. Other circles are requested to make their reports at the next meeting to be held April 21st, at the same place We hope and believe that the success of the scheme in view, is assured. He is now an old man and most deserving." , Endorsed. The State Democratic Executive Committee, yesterday, unanimously adopted the following resolution, of frd by R. M. Furman Esq. : Resolved, That the Democratic Executive Committee for this State hereby endorses and approves the let ter of Mr. E. Chambers Smith, chair man of this committee, to Mr. Elling ton, dated March the 18th, 1892, as setting forth th proper and true test as to who shall be entitled to partici pate in the township u eetings and conventions of the Democratic party in North Carolina. Saloon Keepers Clerks. The decision of the Supreme Court, isto the effect that license is to be is sued only to persons of good moral character. That the license is a per sonal trust, and the person so licen sed is indictable for the sale of spirits to minors, or for its sale on Sundays whether such sale be made by him self or by his clerk. It is held that the license is responsible for criminal negligence in not preventing the il legal sale of liquors by clerks ; that the person in whose name the license is issued becomes guarantor for their observance of the law. The princi pal is responsible for the acts of the agent in the conduct of the business placed in his hands. The oaae is State vs. Kittelle, from Mecklenburg I county. Npecial Hale.
