It is well known among our people that St. John's Hospital is sadly In need of all the help that our citizens can reasonably spare, and any aid is always most acceptable. With the view of doing what he can to aid so worthy an ohjy;5t. Mr. A. Dughi makes a proposition which we must think should be cheerfully accepted. He has fixe'1 up an ice cream saloon at his plarje of business, adjoining Bab bitt's drug store, on Fayetteville street, and next Monday, being Eas ter holiday, he will formally open tb establishment. In doing this, Mr Dught proposes to give the profit on the receipts for Ice cream at his sa loon to St John's Hospital, and in this connection he requests the ladies to call and donate cakes, which, of ourse, will he turna 1 to the same amount. Mr Dughi has on other occasions proven himself a frind of this noble iustitution. and the offer he now makes is much to his.credit Important Case The validity of the fertilizer tax law is again under consideration, the question having been raised by the Patapsco Guano Company. The law passed two years ago, requiring a tax of $500 ecch, was declared by th Supremo Court unconstitutional, and be last, legislature levied a direct ha a of 20 cents on each ton of guano sold or offered for sale in the State The company claims that this tax is as unconstitutional as the old law. The case will be argued before Judge Boud, at Greensboro, on May 7th. Messrs. T. N. Hill, of Halifax, and J. W. Hinsdale, of this city, are attorneys for the company. Steps will be taken by the Board of AgrL culture to protect the State's interest. Good Arrangements. Well, Well, This Beats the Yan kies. The above exclamation was in dulged in yesterCay by a good na tured fat lady who walked into Swin dell's store and saw the entire store crowded with customers, all anxious to be waited on Said she: ' This don't look like dull times; this beats the Yankies. I have been all over town and nobody doing any business but SwiuDell." Said she: "This looks like Baltimore, if you didn't move there." Said she "I have heard Swindell is selling goods of all kinds for less money than t e goods should cost at wholesale, and I suppose this accounts for; this crowd, because I see people in here now who said they would not trade at Swindell's any more 'cause he did not move to Bal timore. See here, Mr. Underwood, (Underwood was the clerk waiting on her), what does Swindell mean by selling these goods so much cheaper than anybody else? Tell me, ain't he fixing to break or something like that? I teM you I would not be sur prised at anything Swindell should do. He is the only man I ever saw that would not cut samples and would not credit people, and still do all the business ot the town. I don't like Swindell, and I left hom- this morn ing swearing to myself that I should not go to Swindell's store, but here I am, and I guess I had better buy what I want." This same lady now feels better. She said what she want' ed to say, and she is now comfortable The same privilege is granted to any one who wants to abuse Swindell.
