FORSAKEN.
W. H. TU0k5K.
Hush for a moment your chatter of glad-
rthe
Listen to a cry shall awaken the world;
A bearV broken cry of loneliest - ulness,
Shall reign till the banners of wrong are
all furled.
Cease for a wh'le your pans of glory.
Over the victories of science and war
With heads bowed in silence, ponder
story
Of cmciQed love, and the heaven's new
star.
Lift not vour voices in singing loud praises;
Shout not in view of rich harvest of gold;
Wait till this crv of incarnate love raises
The dead that have slumbered from age
of old.
"Eloi, Kloi, lama sabacthaai?"
Child of tl e ages, sweet Saviour divine!
Help us to know thee, and t'ust thee, and
love thee.
E'en through thy tears, thi deep darkness
of thine.
Help us to perceive that ; his is the glory
Of the universal, supreme law of love
Forsaken of God, it follows love's story.
Till it girdles the worlds and the stars
above.
That this at once the greatest negation
Ot all human wisdom, confidence, power;
That this is even the soul of creation,
And its triumph immortal, from hour to
hour.
LANGUAGE OF UMBRELLAS.
Cricket.
There is a language of umbrellas as
of flowers. For instance, place your
umbrella in a rack and it will indicate
that it will change owners. To open
it quickly in the street means that
somebody's eye is goijg to he put
out; to shut it, that a hat or two is
going to be knocked off.
An umbrella carried over a woman,
the man getting nothing but the
drippings ot the rain, indicates court
ship. When Ihe man has the um
brella and the woman he drippings,
it indicates marriage. To punch
your umbrella and then open it means
"I dislike you."
To swing your umbrella over your
head, signifies "I am making a nuis
ance of myself." To trail your um
brella along the footpath means that
the man behind you is thirsting for
your blood. To carry it at right
angles under your arm signifies that
an eye is to be lost t y the man who
follows you.
To open an umbrella quickly, it is
said, will frighten a mad bull To
put a cotton umbrella by the side of
a silk one signifies "exchange is no
robbery." To purchase an umbrella
means ' I am not smart, but honest."
To lend an umbrella indicates ' 1
am a fool " To return an umbrella
means well, never mind what it
means, nobody does it. To carry an
umbrella just high enough to tear
out men's eyes and knock off men's
hats signifies "I am a woman."
To press an umbrtlla on your
friend, saying: "OhI do take it; I had
much rather you would than not!"
signifies lying. To give a friend half
of your umbrella means that both of
you will get wet. To cairyitfrom
home in the morning menns "It will
clear off."
