It is a matter of some surprise that no action has, so far, been taken by our mtrchants looking to an early closing of their places of business during the heated term. This is somewhat outside of the usual mode of procedure. The arguments in favor of early closing are so numer one, and have been so often present ed that it would seem almost super fluous to reiterate them. The ad van tages to the employer, employees and citizens are alike beneficial. It must be apparent that but little custom can be gained by a merchant keep ing open his store these short nights. It can hardly reimburse him for the lights burned. Of course the argu ment will be advanced that by keep ing open, a portion of the community is accommodated, and this argument would hold good if a sudden shut down be made, but while it is gener ally known that the store will be closed at night, the public would soon become acquainted with the sit uation and govern themselves cord lngly. In this way our merchants would sell equally as much and both employers and employees would have much needed rest. We hope to see the ball set in motion at once. It is a custom in most cities of the conn try, and wherever adopted it works well for all concerned .
