As usual, it is likely to be a success. We hope our Fourth of Julycom' mittee will heel our suggestion and secure a fine b-id of music for the celebration. There is nothing like good music for such an occasion. Mr B. F. Tipton, editor of the Mt. Holly News died yesterday morning after an illness of several weeks. He was a brother of Col. Juo. C Tipton, editor of the Shelby Review, and for awhile resident of Raleigh. We invite attention to the adver tisement of Norris' Dry Gvjds Store, which announces a specialty in ladies black hose, and slippers, &c. There is no House in the city at which bet ter goods can be procured at cheaper rates. :' The fourth of Julv committee have now raised about $200 from the citi zens which, added to the amount sub scribed by the city, is $150. This is very good so far, but more is needed vat to make the celebration what, it should be Let it be run up to $500 or more. In the meantime, the com mittee are entitled to the thanks of all our people. They are hustlers. The different .Masonic bodies con. Hill lodges wi'l celebrate St. John's Day services in the GoJd Shepherd church on next Sunday -evening at 8 o'clock The services will be conducted by the Rev. I. McK Pittinger and the public are cordially Invited; But for the energetic work of the fire department, last night, the house of Capt 8. A. Ashe which was very near the residence of Mr Lancaster, would probably have been destroyed. Per this kindness Oapt. Ashe returns his 'sincere thinks. , Jo belter or braver firemen than our Raleigh boy. . FIItE. Have We lucouldaries lu Our Midst? In our issue of yesterday afternoon we reported the fact that on the night previous a most dastardly attempt was made to burn the house occupied by Robt. E. Lane ster, on West Jones street just in the . rear of theresi denceof Capt. Ashe. The attempt was made while the family were ab sent at church, and but for their op portune return it would have proven a success, reeling aiarmea at cue outrage, and deeming it best not to again run such a risk, Mr. Lancaster's wife determined last, night to remain at her father's house, a short distance off. Between 9 and 10 o'clock latt night an alarm was sent in from box 43, at the corner of Jones and Saun ders streets, and soon sheets of fl ime were seen issuing from Mr. Lancas ter's house The fire department re sponded with usual promptness, bti. the fire had gotten so well under way that all efforts to got it into subj act ion failed, and the house together with its contents, were soon de stroyed. The circuiustciuces surrounding this case are such as to cauee the deepest indignation among our people coupled with suspense an i e?en alarm. In our peaceful community each an out rage as this is almost unparalleled. That it was the work of some villain or villains of the deepest dye i appa rent, and the whole power of our of ficials, aided by citizens, should be exercised to bring the offender or of- fenders to justice. It is indd a fear ful situation of affairs when a citizen canoot leave his premises even for a short time without beiug subjected to the torch of an incendiary. Let there be no let up in this matter. If necessary there slionl l be a called' meeting of the Board of Aldernie, and a heavy reward offen d Such miscreants deserve t he severest pen alty of t e law There can be no paliation for such a crimo It ranks on our statute books vith anirder and should be so treated Not satisfied with the sec nd atteinot although succcsnfii! it appears that the house was acain fired duri jg the latter portion of the eight as an alarm was sent out about 12 o'clock, and found to proceed from th aam prem ises. When the fireman retired from the scene after the first alarm, all traces of the tire had been ex in -guished. We have reason to know that our police department will use every possible eflort to ferret out the author or authors of the outrage Let it be pushed io the uttermost. We are informed by Mr Lancaster that he lost all he had in the house. The University. -The rapid and healthy growth of the university during the past year is one of the best signs of continued progress. The institution is taking rank with the best in the country. S TRAW -i ATTINGS : -i TUB T MHGAl We have never been able to offer our pat rons so many novel designs in Straw Mat tings as we do f his season. There was a time when one could scarcely get any style in thee mattings besides a small check or plain white. Now they can be seen in many "carpet effects" closely re semblii g the patterns as shown in ' rUssels carpets. Probably the most unique patterns are those in the Jap Mattings, being double dyed and in detached figures. Another new texture in the Jap Matting is that "woven upon the thread," the warp being hemp and the filling of very line grass. This produces the most even surface of any straw floor covering. HWbile we have the more expensive grades, yet we sell a reliable matting at 5 per roll of 40 yaids tf. H. R.8. Tucker $Co
