' u TfH H. 1 ; i J i J H i it NO. 55 VOL. XXVII. RALEIGH, SATURDAY, JUNE 25. 1802. tig The Weather Today. Local forecast for Raleigh till 8 p. n. tomorrow : Fair; cooler. Local data for 24 hoars ending 8 a. m. today: Maximum temperature, 06; mini innra temperature, 72; rainfall 0.00. VITY IN BRIEF. There wan another pic nic party at Pollen park last night. The cool wave is anxiously looked for. A considerable crowd of oar citizens went down to Morehead today. The blackberry crop in the Gail ford section is reported to be short. The swimming pool in Pullen park is in splendid c mdition and every af ternoou and night crowds are in at tendance. And still the popular demand for a new market house bell and cupola in creases Lawn parties will be the correct idea as soon as we have the new moon in good shupe. Hood's barsaparilia absolutely cres all diseases caused by impure blood and it builds u : the whole bjs tern. The annual meeting of the woman's missionary society of the North Car olina conference is in session in Golds, borp. At a recent meeting of the direct ors of the Lynchburg and Durham Railroad Co. W. C. Houston was re elected president. The N rth Durham pants factory desires to secure about one hundred more few 'tie employees. It now has forty. This is encouraging. The cotton receipts in this city for the week ending June 24th were 90 bales against 200 for the same time last year. The receipts to date were 2fi,8G2 against 38,923 last season. The 4th of July posters have been widely distributed all along the dif ferent lines of railway, as well as many other parts of the State. We are likely to have a rousing time. The State Superintendent of Pub lie Instruction is making arrange ments for all the public schools to observe Oct.. l'J'h next as the 400th anniversary of thu discovery of Anier ica by Christophof Columbus. We hope all the railroads will give the exconfederate veterans free pas es to and from Wrightsville, if it is concluded to have an encampment The Railroad Commission surely would not object to this. Spring Hill, just southwest of the city, was sometime since spoken of as a most eligible site for a suburban hotel, on the order of the Kenil worth, at Asheville. It is one of the most commanding an i beautiful places around Raleigh. The reception of the Junior Ep worth League in Edenton St. Sunday School room Thursday night, was well attended, and those present highly enjoyed it. There were songn, recita tions &c, all of which were well ren dered. The protracted services at the Christian church continue with in creasing interest. Several confessions 1 st night. Services will be held to inorrow at 11 00 a. m. and 8 00 p. m and continue next week The pastor kindly invites christian workers to come and help in these services. It has been decided by Manager Huff, of the Street Railway Co., to issue season and monthly tickets to the baching pools at Brookside Park For the former $5 Are charged and $3 for the latter This is a most excel lent idea and should draw a very large patronage. One of the most interesting features of the North Carolina department at the Chicago exposition, will be the tobacco erbi it representing seven towns of the Stite, under charge of Julian S. Carr. - Tomatoes commencing to come in Winston -Salem will celebrate the 4th of July by a big sale of lots. There is very little now doing in cotton. Travel over the railroads is now very heavy. The mountains and sea -shore hotels will soon be crowded with visitors. Ratification meetings are now the nrAer at the dav throughout tne country. Hon. G. W. Sanderlin went down today to attend the Teacher's Assem bly at Morehead. It will soon be moonlight nights again, and boating on the Brookside lake will be pleasant. And now they say, that last night beat the record for heat. It was reallv oppressive. Jars were being sent out from the Agricultural departmnt . yester day to ladies throughout the ptate, who have expressed a desire to have them. The pool at Pnllen Park is 130 by 30 feet and from three to eight feet deep. It is provided with spring boards and dressing rooms. North Carolina 4 per cent consols are now quoted at par. We suppose, however, that this iuclndes the ac crued interest up to July 1st, 1892. Our State officials are really ''rest- ing on their oars" these dull times. A vi it to the capitol rarely reveals any thing of inrerest. The many friends of Col Turk will r. gret to learn that be will hereafter reside in Washington, although they are pleased to hear of bis promotion. Bear in mind the excursion of the Relief Society of the Raleigh and Gaston Railroad, to Littleton, J uly 7th. It promises to b one of the most delightful trips of the season. We want the grandest display of fire works possible, for the 4th of July. Htlp out the committee. There is much more needed and it should be forthcoming bo that the pioper ar rangementB can be made The stay at home crowd are not suffering much in the way of dullness. Our parks with their venous amuse in en t s, and of easy access, by the aid oi street cars, tarnish much amuse ment to while away time. Our friend Dahlborn, the sign art ist, has struck it now. He has se cured the State agency for the 'Bril liant Letter' which he is putting up for W. H. Hughes and others It is proposed that Dr Kingsbury, of the Wilmington Messenger, shall prepare a history of North Carolina. We might go farther and do much worse. He is fully competent in all respects. Those who have failed to list their property for taxation, had better Ho so at once. The time allowed by law has passed, but the tax listers are keeping the books open for awhile to accommodate those who, by inadver tence, have forgotten the matter. It is important, because there is a pen alty attached to a.failure Be on the safe side and attend to it at once. We are requested by a member of the Park Comnzittee of the Board of Aldermen to state, that hereafter, persons desiring to have dancing or other entertainments at Pullen Park will be required to obtain permis sion, in the shape of an order, either from the mayor or chief of police, as the park is under the control of the city authorities. Prof. Massey, of the Agricultural and Mechanical College has in his possession a photograph, taken at the experiment farm, , showing the difference in the growth of Irish po tatoes, on one side being those from home grown seed and on the other those from seed from New York The homje plants are ni'ich finer and more vigorous. They are not attacked by bugs as those from New York. Rev. J. J Hal' has commenced a series of K'ltirenses on tne closing scenes in Hi Life of our Lord A cor dial invitation is extended to the public to be preseut at the Taber nacle at 11 o'clock tomorrow. Several abandon! woiun were before the myor this morning for using Ind-ciif, arid abudve language. These woiueu apponr ,o he chronic offenders, as they are frequently be fore his Hoor. 'the usual verdicts were leudered by the mn'o-. We are sorry to stu that General Secretary Atkinson, of tbe Young Men's Christian Association, is sick. Mr. B. F. Park has gons to Dau vil!, Va., to attend the bedside of his daughter, Mrs. C. E. Wood, who is critically ill. Mrs. Minnie M. Shaw and her two children are in the city stopping with her parents. To Cut the Pipe. To the patrons of the Raleigh Water Company: In making connection for the new Hyatt filterer it will be necessary to cut the main pipe leading to the city frouj the water works If there is no unnecessary waste of water during fchinday, June 20th, 1802, there will be a sufficient quan tity for all domestic and public pur poses. I therefore request consumers of city water not to be extravagant in the use of v ater between 10 o'clock a m and 6 o'clock p. m. Sunday June 26, 1893. Thomas Badgkr, Mayor.
