Arrangements are to be made for the accommodation of about two thousand ex-Co:. federates atWrights ville in August. One of the heavest falls of rain th'.i senson took piace last night abou midnight. The electric display was what might be termed terrific. There was quite a large attendance at the pic nic at Brookside Park yes terday, given by the Sunday school of the church of the Good Shepherd. The railroads running out of Rich mond, Va., have provided special schedules for the grass widowers' clubs. A good idea, and the North Carolina roads might follow suit to advantage. We find that our proposition for the city of Raleigh to aid in the ex tension of the electric railway in Pul len Park, and t otherwise improve the place, meets with much approval. It should be done by all means One of the features at Brookside Park next Monday will , be the corns tening of the six boats on the lake. Manager Huff is busy arranging mat ters and it promises to be an occasion of much enjoyment. Rev. Father .White, formerly pass tor ol the Church of the Sacred Heart in Raleigh, but lately of the Catholic church at Asheville, is in theeity. His many friends will be glad to welcome him. Gov. Holt yesterday afternoon par doned out of the penitentiary James A. Smith, who was sentenced for the murder of John A. Cheatham, in this city, in conjunction with William Gooch in 1685. The pardon was is sued for the reason that the prisoner had an incurable disease and liable to die at any time. Don't leave Raleigh on the 41 h. but if you will go, then go up to the Guilford battle ground. There will be a splendid celebration at that place. All sorts of fun is being mapped out for Monday next, and it is going to be one of the grandest times im aginable. The coming Independence Day will be celebrated with unusual display throughout the ecuutry. The New York Stock Exchange will adjourn until next Wednesday. A colored man named William Har- - i i x a t a. ris died suaucuiiy yesieruay aner- uoon. He was 19 years o'd and a hack driver. Heart trouble seemed to be the cause of death. We are pleased to learn that Gov. Holt is in strict accoid with the pub lie in the matter of a reformatory for youthful criminals and, we believe he will strongly recommend the mat ter to the coneideratiou of the next General Assembly. See statement of the American Fie Insurance Compauy of which Mr. F. H. Cameron, of RileUdi, is General Apeut. It is a reliable company in all respects, and no gentleman is better qualified to represent it, than Mr Cameron. i A friend suaest?-' tla as this is the anuiversVy t be fvar ban dredt.li yoxr ji dUcTsry of America by Oh. isto-her Coin tuba", some reference should be made to thd old gentlemau by our 4th of July ora tors. We learn that ther? is no truth in the rumor that on propised new cotton factory is not to ba built here, but removed to Holly Springs. On our roonls tliis morning we met up with one of our foreu ost and most energetic citizens, who discussed in an open manner many of the needs of our city. Amoug oilier matters, he said that the establishment of what is known as "A Pen ay Saving's Bank" in Raleigh, w raid bean insti tution of great beuefit to th se who wished to lay up something for a rainy day, as well as to those who desired to become directly interested in such an enterprise,. It is beyond doubt that many a dime and nickel is thrown away witli no proper re turns whatever, which, if saved, would prove the nucleus, perhaps to a suug little sum. Now, if thure were an institution here, especia'ly for sums of such minor consideration, it would be taken advantage of by hun dreds of little girh aud boys, as well as many adults. It should be remem bered that large results often fiiw from the most modest beginnings. "Take care of the pence, and the pounds will take care of themselves." This is an old p:-bverb, but i'tis cer tainly a true one. Such an iistltua tion would beget the habit of saving especially upou the younger portion of the community, and the habit thus commenced would grow to great advantage in after life. We would like much to see'such a bank estab lished in Raleigh. It has been tried in other places with marked success. It is food, well worth reflection, and we hope that, at an early day,' some of ou- citizens, wi'l put the scheme fa practical ope-'aVo A Flii" Opportunity. vV h pe l'ie ie iple of Raleigh Keni-'iPy will uor.
