Joseph Ruby, of. Columbia, Pa., suffered from birth with scrofula hu mor, till he was perfectly cured by Hood's Saisaparilla. Col. Eugene G. Harrell, Chief Or dinance officer of the N. C. National Guard, is busy issuing new guns in place of the old and unserviceable ones. It is proposed to mase an old guns serviceable. Mr. Will Wynne has returned from Boston with three Dunlap bicycles; upon one of these he will make his transcontinental trip. It Is a very light machine weighing oily about thirty pounds. The ladies of Raleigh are using much energy in the matter of raising funds for laying the corner stone of the proposed confederate monument. We most earnestly hope that our people may help them out to the ex tent of their ability. It is a most de serving cause and should be well sus taioed. Next Monday morning at 1 o'clock an excursion train will leave the North Carolina depot for Littleton, where a big camp meeting is in pro gress - This will afford a most excel lent opportunity for our colored cltN zens to visit the great All Healing Springs for a mere trifle. A separate car will be attached for white persons and all who go can anticipate a most enjoyable time. Let it be remember ed' that the lound trip fare will be only $1. It will be an occasion rarely offered. Let all who want to get rid for awhile of the dust of the city, pre pare to go. Turn Out. We are authorized to state that the meeting of the Cleveland Carr Clab which takes place next Thursday night will be specially devoted to the matter of making proper arrange ments for the reception of Gen. Adlai Stevenson and other distinguished gentlemen. With this in view the meeting will not be confined to mem bers of the club, hut it is earnestly hoped that our business men general ly will: take part. There is gre it excitement in Greens boro over the recent murder of Mr. Solathiel waim near Pleasant Gar den last Tuesday. A youn white man names Charles RevnolJs and a negro named Marion Headen have been lodged ia jail in Greensboro, charged with the crime. Charles Reynol Is says the murder was committed by a negro named William Long, who had been driving an orrnity-s for the Mc Adoo House in Greensboro: He says he saw Long creep up near old man Swalm, place the pistol near him and fire. Long then ran, gave him a handf ull of money and told him not to say anythirg about It. He told the sheriff he would find the money and pistol In a box In his house. He said that he was dividing the money with Headen and Long passed along the road. Martia Headen, the colored man, says he was wonting in tne woods with Reynolds. Saw Long pass. The sheriff hns discovered the money and pistol where Reynolds says it was. He found $120 in money. Long has succeeded in proving an alibi, and the crime is undoubtedly fixed on Reynolds and Headen. Destructive Fire. One of the most disastrous fires that has occurred in this vicinity took place last night between the hours of 8 and 9 o'clock, destroying the build fag know as the acid department of the.Caraleigh Phosphate Miljs, situa ted just southwe.it of the city. The building was about 250 feet long and 60 feet wide. The origin of the fire is not precisely known, but is supposed to have been cawed from the igni tlon of a kerosene lamp. The entire building wascorsumed, including the machinery, the total loss being estl mated from $25 000 to $40,f0D. Sev. ral members of the fire department went out to the scene, but of course eonld not carry their apparatus They did good however, although it was impossible to save the house. There Is on the grounds water works equip ment whieh was used as far as practi cable. This is indeed a sad loss co our in dustries, but we are pleased to learn from Mr. Frank Danoey, the energetic President of the company, that the work of reconstruction will be com menced as early as possible.
