Looal forecast for tbia vicinity: On ThoWay, fair weather, station ary temperature Loeal data for U hoars ending 8 a. il. -today: I ' V :j Maximum temperature, 84; mini mnin temperature 69; rainfall 0.57. CITY IM Bill Ft'. Cant eloo pes getting scarce. Pplendld rains and the farmers are happy. The rain last nfght interfered w,"" h the proposed carnival at B ooksiJe Park. There are l.l'O convicts attached to the penitentiary, 179 of whom are in the prison. The show season and the festive oyster season wIV soon be with us again. Notwithstanding the rain this morning a large crowd left on the ei eurslon to Richmond V. It is stated that cotton h opening rapidly with about the sr me devl opement m at th's t'ne last year. A game of base baU will i,e played at Charlotte between the Atlanta, Ga., and Augusta teams on August 29th. No other Sarsapari'la has the meiit In it by which Hood's Sarsaparilla has won such a firm hold upon the confi dence of the people. It is now stated that the new Odd Fellows Lodge in this city will not be organize 1 until Wednesday n'ght, August 81st Public Mecling Tonight. There will be a mass meeting of the citizens of Raleigh held under the auspices of the Cleveland and Oarr Club, looking to the reception and entertainment of vice-president Stevenson and other noted speakers to be here on the 16th day of Septem ber. This will be a very important meeting and I earnestly request those of our citizens who are interested in the welfare of our city, the Democra' tic party and good government to meet with us tonirrht at the Mayor's office and help make arrangements for this, the greatest gathering of noted men and speakers that has been within our borders for many years. Everybody invited to attend. FRA.HK S.-'AOtfaCH, President Cleveland and Oarr Club A Jtyuch Needed BuMding. At last we have a Union depot that is all that could be desired. In a fe more months we will have a bei-nti ful new hotel and an auditorium. Bat the last named -will not meet the need of a building for great occasions, and we want to urge that matter upon our people A good t uilder in forms as that a wooden building cap able of seating 8,000 people can be pat up for $3,500. Bupposa we say 4,000 people for $3,003. It will of coarse be very plain and rough in exterior bat will be strong and equal to Its demands, ano only one story, If wf had snot a building It cou'd be used for all State Conventions, " for skatlag rink, bicycling, &o. n - alar concert troupes, with low pritj of admission would be induced come this way. Public speakers who draw great crow is would have a place where tbey could be protected from expo are, of weather, and their, hearers listen with comfort. v i xV evangelists, such as Mr. Sam Jones Mr: Fife and others would visit as all of these paying a small rental would yield good interest on the investment. - Tbint for a moment of our centen nial exercises. What an advantage if we had snoh a great hall . in . which jto hold them. ' ' ." v We hope some of oar people on the Chamber of Commerce will take hold of this matter at onoe. .. It is stated on the authority of Prof James Dinwiddle, president of Peace Institute, that there will be a largely Increased attendance at the Institution the coming season. This is gratifying news as there is no bet ter female seminary in the Southern States. The attention of the public is partic ularly directed to the advertisement of that progressive firm Messrs. Thomas and Maxwell furnlLore deal ers. These gentlemen ere fast cen tering the trade of our people to their emporium where they exhibit at all times a splendid stock at the most reasonable prices. Since their removal, in order to make room for their suburb fall stock they are of ferirg B'ich Inducements as heve never been offered in Raleigh. Yve call upon the ladies especially to call and see for tbemselvss. For house wives and young couples fl'st enter iDg on housekeeping, this chance should not be missed. In fact our en tire people should take advantage of the bargains offered. Such prices are seldom met with. Died. This morning at ia.rat Fannie, aged 9 days, the daughter of Mr. Joseph Creighton and the late Mrs. Joseph Creighcon.
