The A. and M. College is flourish ing. It now has about 80 stndents. Opening address Tuesday evening by Dr. Sanderlin. The work of putting the tents in position in Nash Square has been progressing nicely today. Dr. J. B. Cranfill, the prohibition party candidate for Vice President, we understand, is expected to be here and speak next Saturday. Col. R. 8 Cheers will be on hand and speak. The funeral of Mrs. Walter O. Prof. James Dinwid dle gave a very Interesting address to the young men. Th meetings are becoming, more popular every Sunday. The boys meeting was well attend ed also Ladies Meeting. The Ladies Auxiliary of the Young Men's Christian Association are re quested to attend the regular month ly meeting of the Auxiliary. Tuesday afternoon at 5:30 o'clock. It is to be hoped that the whole Auxiliary will be present. A Piano Free Messrs. Fetter & Shober, of Louis ville,; Kentucky, publishers of Fetter's Southern Magazine, are doing some thing never attempted by any other publishers. They propose to give away a four hundred avid fifty dol lar piano to the first person securing two hundred yearly subscribers and will give the same style of Instru ment to any person sending them two hundred aud fifty yearly subscribers. The magazine is one of high merit price $2 50 a year. Personal. Prof. J. D. Arnold, pf the Asheville, N. C, Female College, was in the city yesterday and preached a fine sermon at Central Methodist church last night Mr. N. Y. Gulley, of Franklmton, came in on the Shoo Fly this morning to do some shopping. Always glad to see friend Gu'ley; even, a farmer does not oibject to such a Gulley. Rev. Dr. J. W. Carter, who has been absent from his charge for a short while, returned on Saturday and oo cupied.his pulpit In the First Baptist church .yesterday. We regret to" learn through the News and Observer of the death of Miss Mary Lippitt, daughter of Mr. A. D. Lippitl of Plttsboro. ' Prof. A. Bauman and Mr. N. B. Broughton returned to the city on Saturday after a short absence. , Mr. Geroge Little who is connected with Col; Turk's office in Washington, D. C, and who has been at home on a short visit in the city, returned to his post yesterday. Mr. Iley Harwood and family left last Saturday for Baltimore, to make it their future home. Mr. J. 0. R. Little still continues very ill. Mr. Elias Carver continues quite sick with typhoid fever. His friends are axious about him We were glad to see our young friend, Mr. T. A Montgomery on the streets on Saturday. He is looking Well. 'V:::.X':1 " Mr. J. W. Bailey and T. J. Pence will leave for Wake Forest college tomorrow, to enter on a course of Med icine. Stevenson. the Democratic Nominee for the Vice- Presidency, that he shonld visit our State about the middle of the present month. Mr. Simmons, chairman of State Oommttee, has, at the request of the Cleveland Carr Club designate ed our city a one. of the five points at which Mr. Stevenson will publicly address the people. On the same date, the 16th of Sep tember there is to assemble here the State Convention of Pemocraiio Clubs, a-fk is expented that these events will bring together probably the largest gathering we have ever had. For the proper celebration of the occasion and the entertainment of Mr. Stevenson, and the distinguished gentlemen who will accompany him, there are oertain necessary expenses, and these, the Finance Committee of the Cleveland-Carr Club have un dertaken to defray from the subscrip tions of our patriotic people. The committee will begin to canvass on Monday, and the undersigned, on be half of the Committee, do hereby earnestly appeal to you for your lib eral and hearty support. As Mr. Stevenson will visit other points, where extensive preparations for his reception are in progress, let us not, at the capital of the State, be behind them in our hospitality.
