Heart disease was the cause. Charles Reynolds and the negro man Headen have been sentenced to be hung In Guilford on the 20th of October for the murder of Solathiel Swaim. There was a meeting of the State Board of Education yesterday, with Gov. Holt presiding. A survey of 80, 000 acres of land in Craven county by Gen. W. G. Lewis, State Engineer, was ordered. The ladies have contributed gener ously to make the Nash Square enter tainment a grand success. Remem ber there will be an abundance of barbecue and Brunswick stew on hand tonight. The plans of the proposed new model barn at ihe A. & M. College will be drawn by Mr. W. J. Matthews, one of the best architects in the Se nior class. This was awarded him as a reward of merit. ..' Notice. The funeral services of the late Mrs. J. M. Mooie will be held from the First Presbyterian church on Thursday ' afternoon at 4 o'clock. Friends and acquaintances are Invited to attend. Accepted. We learn that Rev. Dr. Daniel, of Memphis, Tenn., has accepted the pastorate of the First Presbyterian church in this city, to take charge October 1st next. He is a gentleman of distinguished ability. License. Applicants to practice law will be examined before the Supreme Court on Friday and Saturday, September 23d and 24th. Arguments will com mence Friday, the 27th, on appeals from the First District. On the Tues day following appeals from the 8ec ond District wilt be called. Musical Concert. On Thursday night next, at Metro politan Hall, there will be a musical concert which closes the eeries of the Nash Square entertainments. The concert will be under the direction of Professor Frank Cunningham, of Richmond, Va. He is well known in this city, whre he has many friends who will give him no doubt a most cordial greeting. He will be assisted by some of our best local talent. The price of admission will be 31 and 25 cents. Let there be a rousing crowd present. Lawn Party. The opening of the lawn party at Nash Square last night was a grand success in all particulars. The chief event of the evening was the address of Hon. G. W. Sanderlin, who was introduced by Mr. W. C. Stronachin a most appropriate manner. It was a most interesting discourse. At the conclusion of the speech the crowd erjjoyed the delicious spread around and the many amusements provided. Let there be a large attendance dur ing the continnance of the entertain ment. A New Scheme Among the Girls. The young folks have invented a new scheme to raise money for char itable deeds among the poor during the coming winter. They have origi nated what is called an avoirdupois party. A number of young ladies and gentlemen assemble at the park. Each girl is weighed and her beau or escort on the occasion has to pay half a cent a pound for her. The asseem bly occurs once a week, but a new set of escorts is generally present. Personal. Mr. E. B B.arbee has returned to the city from Chicago. Mr. E. A. Sholar, formerly of this city, but now of Chattanooga, is in the city. , Mr. John Morris an ol;? Raleigh boy with his wife and child from Rich mond, Va., is iu the city visiting his father and sister, looking well. Mr. Wm. Woollcott has returned from the Northern cities where he purchased a large stock of goods. Mr. Frank Dewey has accepted and entered upon his duties in a railroad position at Norfolk, Va. ', The Juvenile Circus. By special request the Juvenile Circus gave two performances last night under their large canvass On both occasions the tent was packed to its utmost capacity, the door re ceipts netting $20.11. The young men deservingly re ceived commendation on every band. as it was an unusually fine per for mance. The especial favorite of the evening was Mr. F. H. Moseley (Prof. Spider) who received long and loud applause for his celebrated combination of the chair stretch and hoop pass, and his unexcelled backward bending.
