Ysterday morning as the little three year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Thaxton was beiug washed, pre paratory to dressing, the bathing tub containing hot water, became in some manner upset scildiog the little feN low so severely that he died at five o'clock this morning from the effects. Oxford 10:15 p. m. Rich mond 7 am. Horrible Murder. Early yesterday morning news was received in this city that a most das tardly murder had been committed at Burlington, Alamance county. The reports are very meagre and we have been unable to gather many particular?. From what we can gath er, Mr. Matthews, a very worthy citi zen engaged in the mercantile busi ness, beard some person or persons about 2 o'clock yesterday morning picking the lock at his back door. He took a gun which he usually kept in the room in which he slept and went out of the front door. He then start ed for the rear of the premises through an alley. When about mid way he was fired upon by the thief or thieves and killed. As Boon as the murder becaire known the greatest excitement prevailed, and every ef fort made to ferret out the murder erg.
