IJtsttot VOL. XXVIII. RALEIGH, MONDAY, NOVEMBER 21. 1892. NO. 26 IN MEMO RI AM. Testimonial of Edenton Street ML. E. Snndy Nchu-l to State Treasurer Bala. It i not of tea that we moara as we are moarnloff now! Id the history of every person and church or other organization there is at some time a supreme grief which overshadows all other sorrows and in the darkening gloom of which every other loss or disappointment or at fiiotion seems slight and trivial. Bach is the supreme and overshadowing sorrow that has settled upon this 8unday school. We have had frequent bereave ments bv whlch pious ard devoted officers and teachers, and pure and promising pupils have been separat d from their colleagues and colaborers bv the- hand of death, but these loss es, while they left wounds and rears, did not drive the iron into our hearts as the death of our dearly beloved Bain has done No ODe connected with this Sunday school can remem ber the time when our departed bro thes was not an important part of it if not its most devoted and zealous officer and mambr; and there are hut few, if any, membeis of the church, lengthened though their lives be bv borrowed years whose recolloetiou of this Sund iv chool and its work does not bring vividly to their mini the gentle boy and gentle man who has just been laid no rest in our Mtv of the Dead His benevolent fce and kindly manner, his grtle voW and cheerful greeting, so familiar to every one who attends this school and church, are sidly mised today The historv of this 8unday school. should it ever written, would not be accurate or complete did it not tell, upon almost every page of some thing that Donald Bain said or did for its upbuild'n and prosperity, and should its his'orian desire to depict upon his pages a model of piety, zeal and virtue, the life and character of Mr Bain would afford him at once and completely the materials for his , work. It is proper that, upon the death of such a man, so closely related as he was by a lifetime service in this Sun day school, we should give expressions to onr sense of loss and place upon record our stimate of his worth; therefore. Resolved, That in the death of our brother Donald W. Bain, aebiBtitu superintendent of the Endeton Street M. E. Sunday school, we have sus tained a loss that is severe, grevious and irreparable one. that seems a personal loss to every one who, as an officer or teacher or pupil, has como within the hifluance of his gentle and Christian life and presence Resolved 2d. That in every rela tion of life -domestic, social, relig ious and political Bro Bain was true, honest and faithful to every duty which that relation imposed upon him; pure in heart and life, as siduous in labor, diligent in business, zealous in Christian work, never for getful of his alleigance to his Lord and Master, charitable to the poor, as kind and courteons to those in low station as to those in a higher sphere - of life, honest, manly, clean hearted and clean handed 1 Besotted 3d, That a record be made of these resolutions, a copy be furnished the Raleigh Christian Ad vocate for publication, and a copy be sent to the family of our deceased brother with the assurance of our sincerest sympathy and condolence for and with them in their great be reavement. The days of the Thanksgiving tur key are almost numbered. The ladies are already making their rounds looking out for Thanksgiving dinner. Don't fail to remember the poor on Thanksgiving day. You will feel better from the bestowal of some thing upon the needy. The General Assembly will convene on the first Wednesday after the first Monday in January next, which will be on the 4th, day of the month. Our colored firemen have under consideration an invitation to visit welcome week celet ration in Wil mington. We hope they may find it practical to da so. They are effl cient in all respects, and we feel that they will do credit to our city Mr. Weston R Gales, Assistant State Secretary, will address young men at the Toung Men's Christian Association tonight at 8 o'clock, in stead of Mr. L . Coulter who was unavoidably detained in the wes tern part of the State. All young men are cordially invited. Good music ond good singing. We invite b Mention to the Lvon Racket Store which makes a special announcement of rus, mats &o. They have on hand such a stock as must, strikt all who visit their store with surprise, especially at the as tonding low price at which these goods are being offered. Call and ee for yourself. It is certain that the coming legis lat.ure will have to mak' an addition al appropriation for the couiDhtion of the D?e,f and Dumb Asylum at Morcautou The building ia only about one third completed, aud work has b-en stopped as the appropria tion has run out. In this connection wf renew our proposition for the gen eral assembly to add to the buildings in this city. It is evident that the removal of tb asjluru to Morganton was at least premature. In any event the institution in this city should re main. ' How would it work to have the question of an extension of our cor porate limits submitted to the people at the municipal election in May. The xratter should also be submitted to those on the outside who are pro posed to be taken in. Common con sent in the matter would be much better, so that there would be no growling afterwards. We remember when the corporate limitE were ex tended in ny years since it created a terrible "racket" among the "out siders" and "insiders" and we almost had a joucg rebellion. We think it would be well to "count the noses" beforehand It may save a lot of bad blood. Whit say those who ought to know all about, it The Visitor will hear what you have to say about it. Bex Hospital. We note that there will be a sale of valuable real estate by authority of trustees of Rex Hospital, to take place next month and, we argue from this that in all probability some steps are to be taken for the purpose of devot ing the lands to the uses It was in tended. We sincerely hope that all diffioulies in the way, may be re luoved, and that a hospital of proper pretensions on an eligible site, may soon be an accomplished fact. It is an institution greatly noeded in onr midst. : In fact it has become almost a necessity. Other cities in the state are moving in the matter and there should be no good reason why the capital should be laeard. v Attention Patriarchs. Regular meeti ig of Lltohford En campment No. 26, tonight at 7:39 p vc. The R. P. Degree will be con ferred. A full attendance is desired.
