We are pleased to learn that this well known institution of learning for the colored race is in a inont pros perous condition, both as to the num tnr of students and in other respects. It can be well ranked among the most, effective institutions of the kind in the south and its management un der the control of Rev H. M. Tupper and hi associates is in the highest degree commendable. It certainly has proven a most effective instra ment for good to the colored people and we hope it may long continue to have a most brilliant career. Our friend, and fellow citizen Dr. Thos. D. Hogg having returned from Ne Orleans where he went as a del egate to the Nicaraugua canal is full of interesting reminiscences of his trip. The doctor is at all times, a most ardest advocate of progress, and he is enthusiastic on the subject of the great interoceanio highway. We have heard that he is, like all true Americans, a strong believer in what is knrtwn as the Monroe doctrine, and wishes it, carried out to the letter in this case. Manager Heartt has arranged for the . appearance .;of the Swedish Quartette Company here on next Thursday night, th 15th last. This is quite an -event in musical circle. Lock Them Up. A facetious friend remarked on the streets today that it would become all who have purchased turkeys eith er to lock them no or provide high roosts. This is a season when it is considered almost a matter of prece dent to take when the chance is of fered. There are a thousand or more midnight prowlers who, from impe cuniosity orjother causes, think it smart to rob fowl roosts. Either lock them up, or roost them high, if they are to be died op for Christmas. We invite special attention to the attractive advertisement of Mr. D. T. Johnson in this issue. He is offering to the public such tempting- array of all tbe good things of life as is al most impossible to resist. Here can be found in the greatest abundance all that is necessary for a happy Christmas. Call and inspect the stock. It is a show in itself. There are very few applications now for refunding the federal taxes paid in 1865 The amount left over is considerable, which is somewhat unex pected. One claim was presented to day from Durham by a gentleman formerly a resident of this city. Mr. Willis H. Brogden of Wayne who was convicted of murder was brought to the penitentiary yester day af ternoon to commence his sen tence of six years. Trie sale of fertilizers for the year amounts to If 0,000 tons against 135.000 for last year. This is in accordance with the estimate of commissioner Robinson.
