John Stronach aud Will Al eott. These two gentlemen are rrg ulA)vhu8tIers in a business point of vieW, and we predict for them a fall measure of success. The Weather Today. There is no subject that more really interests our people in the manage ment of their local affairs than that pertaining to roads. In fact, in this fast and progressive age the country, state, or community that is lacking in the way of pood highways must necessarily suffer. In this connec tion we most heartily commend the action of the Chamber of Commerce at the recent session. While, of course, there is a natural tendency of our people against increased taxation, we must think that when It can b clearly seen such an additional levy will redound to public and Individ a il good will be ebeerlully acqaie'cf d in Mr. R. H. Battle's resolution is as; follows, and was unanimously adopted : Resolved, that it be recommended to the board of county commissioners to take steps as soon as possible to have a vote taken in the townships adjacent to Raleigh township, for th" levying of a tax for the improvi ment of the public roads in said townships respectively in like manner as the public roads in Raleigh township have been improved In addition to tfriat, Mr. Battle offered a lesolution "which was adopted, in subst-mce that the president of th chamber oppoint a cominitteo of five to memo riilize the coding General Assembly to call together at the proper time and place a road congress for the pur poBe of improving the public roads of the state and matters pertaining thereto, the member of l)ich con gress to be appointed bv the gover nor, mayors of towns, chirmau of county commissioners au'l in such other ways as may deemed most advisable. We look upon this suggested move ment, as one of the most important matters that has ever been broup-ht to the attention of our people, in a business point of view. It is one so closely allied to our material interests that it should receive the earliest at- tention. at the hands of legislate rs The following committee was ap pointed to carry out the provisions of the resolution : H. B Battle chair man, W. C. McMackin, R. H. Lewis, Frank Stronach, W. P. Batchelor. That these gentlemen will do their whole duty in the premises goes without saying. When the committee appointed at the recent meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, to consider the matter of applying to the legislature for p road congress, gets down to business, would it not be well to fully ven tilate the subject of a road tax. It would be money well expended and pay better in the end than the old Idea.' ' ' There are now 1,122 convicts at tached to the penitentiary. Of these only 116 are in the prison, the bal ance being distributed on the various (tate farms and public improvements, j See notice of valuable property for Ue by Mr. J. A. Spenoe. White was conductor and Mr. Faieon engineer. We appied to the freight office o the R. Si G. railroad, but no particulars bad been received up to the time of goioc to press. Fritz in Ireland.
