We learn that Mr. Branson is com piling another directory of our city and county. The book made by him two years ago was the largest and most complete ever made fjr any city in this state. As Wake county including Raleigh is by far the most populous county in the stt, hence it is proper that we ehould have a good directory well sustained by our business people. The Weather. The North Carolina Commercial aad Industrial Association recently hold a meeting in this city, and a committee was appointed to formu late and recommend to the legisla ture such amendments to the Insur anoe laws as might be proper This committee will meet in the Commer cial and Farmers' Bank February 7th. The following constitute the com mittee : Col. R M Douglas, J E Gil mer, W S Parker, Judge Fred Phil lips, V F Klutz, Capt J J Thomas, Wm. Relief Committee. Our energetic fel'ow citizen, Mr. Alf A. Thompson, chairrnai of the relief committee, has submitted a le ' port showing that the number of or ders supplied by committee was 1,156 for provisions and 600 for wood, ma king a total of 1 7 6. Estimating each family at four persoos the com mittee luroiehe I food for 4,624 and wood for 9,400 besides a contribution of 60 to Oberlin, and paying $77 to laborers on the streets. Senator Day yesterday introduced a bill in he roa e looking to the erection iu Nnsh Square of a monu ment to the statesmen soldiers and sailors of tue four great wars of the country The resolution anticipates the appointment of a commission who shall take the matter of contract into consideration and report to the General Assembly. While we heartily commend the purposes of the resolu tion, we had hoped for measures which would sooner consummate the matter. Ihe following is the resolution: "Resolved by the Senate, the House if Representatives concurring, That there shall be erected on Nash Square, in the city of Raleigh, a suit able monument, worihy of the State, as a memorial to the statesmen, sol diers and sailors who, - during four great wars have upheld the honor and fame of the sovereign State of North Carolina. That Walter Clark, Jacob Battle and Marion H. Holt are hereby appointed a committee who shall procure plans; specifications at.d estimates of the cost , of such monument, and report the same with their recommendations to the next General Assembly " hat such plans shall provide for a central equestriac statute, and at the base ten pedes tals to be filled hereafter with stat utes of ten distinguished statesmen, uoldiers and suitors of this Htate, four of which shall be allotted to heroes dietingushed in the war of the revo lution two to the war with Mexico and four to the 'ate civil war.
