Col. H. 8. Bargwynn of Henderson
Is here.
Col. Harry Skinner of Pitt, ia In the
city.
Some splendid theatrical perform'
ances are expected in the near future.
The last half of the session of the
Legislature is now upon' us. From
now out we can rely on business.
Several gentlemen from the New
England states are in the city looking
around.
The reception which was to have
been held at the Executive Mansion
this evening has been postponed.
The opera of "Ma c3tt" will be
presented for the benefit of the King's
Daughters of this city.
It is said that the cold weal her ia
to continue for some weeks louger by
order of the ground hog.
Now for night sessions and crowded
galleries in the two nouses of the
General Assembly.
" I was deaf for a year, caused by
catarrh in the head, but was perfect
ly cured by Hood's Parsaparilla."
H. Hicks, Rochester, N. Y.
The L'Allegro german has been
changed from Monday night till to
morrow nigh. It is requested that
gentlemen present cards at the door.
Looking at the Columbian postage
stamp one would imagine that the
length and bredth of stamps had
grown in proportion to the growth of
the coj' ltry.
Notwithstanding the Inclement
weather there was quite a good house
at Metropolitan hall last night to
witness the performance of "Jim
The Westerner."
This morning, bright and early,
there appeared at the home of one of
our enterprising merchants and vine
yardest. a bouncing little boy stran
ger, that pulled the beam down to
twelve pounds.
As there are a majority and minor
ity report on the contested election
case of NewBoirt against Stack, there
will, no doubt be a most interesting
discussion in the Senate tonight
when the matter comes up.
The making married women respon
sible for debts contracted so far as
their separate estate is concurred,
caused a very long discussion in the
Senate to day. It was linallydefeat
ed. One of the biggest events of the
present year will be the departure of
about 509 teachers and their friends
in August next for a twenty days visit
to the World's Fair at Chicago. They
will of course, be chaperoned by
our friend Col. E. G. Harrell who
knows just how to entertain on such
a trip. The teaches wiH only incur a
cost of thirty five dollars.
The ladies of North Carolina in the
strenuous efforts they ae making to
Deroetuate the deeds of our Confed
erate dead but recall to the men of
our State the words of Judge Gaston.
"So graceful, so constant, yet to gent
lest hearts trembling." The very
name of Confederate Monument
seems to have aroused every daugh
ter of the "Old North State" and
from all sections of the State come
words of encouragement. Mrs. R. W.
Bidgood, of Fayettevllle, has just
sent $86 80 raised through her efforts.
While the letter of Judge Schenck
may have teen considered by him
as necessary under the circumstances,
wi think it entirely unnecessary for
his vindication. The State of North
Carolina contains no gentleman of a
higher sense of honor, and no citizen
who knows him, would believe for. a
moment that in every movement of
his life, he is not actuated , by the
purest motives. He is without

The entertainment of Professor
Schneider, at the Church of the
Good Shepherd, next Thursday night

The professor has the highest en
dorsements of the press, and as the
entertainment is for the benefit of the
church, we sincerely hope it may be
well attended.

Death of James WcKiniinon.
It is with the deepest regret that
we announce the death of the above
named gentleman which occurred
lust night about 9 o'clock, at his res
id once, on north Blount street.
Although the health of Mr Mc-
Kimmon has been for some time past
ia a precarious condition, his death
was somewhat sudden. He was in
the 63rd year of his age and justly
considered one of our best citizens.
He graduated at Chapel Hill and
served throughout the war in Man
ley's battery. At the close of the war
he engaged in the business of a com
mercial trader for a large drug estab
lishment, but afterwards became pro
prietor of a drug establishment in
this city, which he was engaged in
conducting at the time he was taken
sick.
In all relations of life Mr. McKim
mon' was a true hearted, noble gen
tleman.
He bad in all respects the
courage of his convictions, which he
boldly asserted, but In a manner not
to offend those who ditlered with him.
it can be said that ho was generous
almost to his detriment, and no ob-
ject of charity met his view without
a kind response.
He leaves a wife, three children, bro
ther, two sisters and other relatives to
mourn their loss, with whom, in com
mon with our comix unity at large,
we most deeply sympathize.
An exchange says a new fractional
currency of the denominations of 10,
15, 25 and 50 cents will be issued in a
few weeks and will resemble the old
fractional currency issued during the
war.- :
