It is with feelings of peculiar sad ness and deep regret that we learn that our much beloved and highly esteemed matron, Miss Mry L Wil liams, will soon sever ber connection with the" Home" with which she has solong been connected, and ver which she as matvou bas fitly presided. By her great kindness for us in our trouble aad afflictions, she has en deared herself to us all and we can truly say that her kindness, syinpa thy and consideration, li'te that of her two sisters who have been with her all alternately as companions here, have only been exceeded by her many other good qualities, of which we poor old soldiers here have been the recipients. Our best wishes and Bincerest prayers will eer fo'low her. G. D Goodwin, John M. Pools, Wm. Pok, C. E. Landis, and others of the Soldiers' Home. SATISFACTION Is guaranteed to every consumer of HOOD'S Sarsaparilla. One hundred doses ia every bottle. No other does this. .in SALT WATER GARGLE. In these days when diseases of the throat are so universally prevalent and in so many capes fatal we feel it our duty to say a word in behalf of a most effectual, if not positive, cure for sor throat. For many years past, indeed we may say for the whole of a life of more than 40 years, we have been subject to a dry, hack ing cough, which is not only distress ing to ourselves but to our friends and those with whom we are brought Into business contact. Last fall we were induced to try what virtue there was in common Bait; We commnnced using it three times a day, morning, noon and night. We dissolved a large table spoonful of pure table salt in half a email tumbler of water With this we gargled the throat most thorough ly just before m al time 1 he result was that during the entire winter we were not only free from coughs and colds, but the dry, hacking cough had entirely disappeared. We at tribute these satisfactory resu'tssole ly to the use of salt water gargle, and most cordially reccommend a trial of it to those who are subject to diseases of the throat. Many persons who have never tried this gargle have the impression that it Is unpleasant; but after a few days' use no one who loves a nice clean mouth and first rate sharpener of the 'appetite will aban don it.- The Household. Remember the " Maecott" next Fri day night. THE LOVE TOKENS. Baltimore, February 6. A novel suit will shortly be taken op for trial In the Superior Court Through the potency of the law a rejected sulcor will attein t to recover the irany (rs -nts be gave bis sweetheart dor1 leg their engagement, which did not last quite a year. The suit wa entered through Martin Lehmayer, c.'uose' for the plaintiff, who Is Natbao Feldman, who formerly lived ia Vnbhin3t0n, North Carolina, but if now u iking his home In this city. The young lady is Miss Theresa Malkau, daughter of Mr. A. Malksn, who conducts a meat store at No. 832 east Baltimore street. Miss Malkau is a beautiful young woman about twenty yenrs old, with large black eyos and rosy cheeks. Fieldman is h out twenty-four years old, and for some years conducted a clothiDg stoe "c Washington;' N C. Busis ness often brought him to Baltsmore, and during one of these visits he met Vifs Malkau. In October, 1891, it is claimed that they became engaged be Id in en states that from that time uutU July, 1892, when the engage ment was broken, he presented Miss Malkau with a gokl watch and chain and several sums of money, amount ing in all to $195. He also claims $50 of this amount was sent to Mi6 Malkau about a month before the engagement ended. A portion of this sum was to be used to hire a hall for the wedding. Feldman values all his gifts at about $G09 Hp allege thf the origageioeti' was broken off by the girl's father, who w-ote him a letter to that effect at the time. Mirs Maikau said: "I met Mr. Feld man in October,' 180f, and was en gaged to him for several months. I acknowledge receiving presents and money f 1 om him, but not one cent of it was iDteuded for the purpose he has stated. This certainly (i a queer condition of affairs, for, in my opin ion, if a young man makes presents to his finance, they are hers abso lutely and I don't Bee under what pretext he could or would attempt to regain such property. With Mr Feldman I made a mistake, but did not discover that fact for several months. I found out that he was not to my fancy, and accordingly broke off the engagement. At pres-. ent I am receiving the attentions of another young man. Since tbe case has been instituted, however, I will employ counsel." I Can't Eat," - Is often heard. People who have taken Hood's Sarsaparilla highly recommend it for loss of appetite, indigestion, sick headache, and similar troubles. This medicine gently tones the stomach, assists digestion, and makes you "real hungry."; Constipation, and all troubles with the digestive organs and the liver are cured by Ho' PUU, Fried 25c. per box. ZANTE ISLANDERS. A Zante cablegram says : Never in living memory has this lovely island endured bo terrible a trial as that , caused by the earthquake of yesterday morning. The whole island rocked and swayed. The in habitants were shrieking. Many, half-naked, fled to open spaces. With daybreak desolation and woe were depicted on every face. Hardly a single house escaped in jury. The lower part of the town is a mass of ruins. 'People are camp ing out in olive groves. TWO lOBB TILLAGES WRECKED. Another very violent shock oc curred at 2 this morning. Two vil I ages were levelled. Two such severe shocks in succession are without a parellel on the annals of the island. Business is entirely suspended. Seismographic readers prove that the earthquake originated five miles due east of the island. PRATING FOR HE I P. Tomorrow there will be a general prayer and a procession of the patron saint, Denis. The Government re lief is utterly inadequate to allay the sufferings of the people. I ndianS on tee war path. Omaha, Neb., Feb. 4. An Indian disturbance threatens the Northwest. Last night the band of old chief Two Strikes ambushed cowheys at Hum phrey's ranch twenty miles north west of Pine Ridge Agenoy, S. D,, ' and fifteen miles west of the Wound ed Knee battleground of two years go, and killed five of them. Two Strike's band, numbering two hun dred of the worst Indians, had com mitted some depredations, and when pursued by the cowboys iy in - ait for them. The inurdwrnus red men are still at large, defying arrest. pf Mr. Warren D. Wentz - of Geneva, N. Y., Tells of His Fearful Sufferings After Gastric Fever and His Cure by Hood's Sarsaparilla All who know Mr. W. D. Went give him the best of recommendations for honesty and integrity. For many years he has worked for Mr. D. P. Wil son, the harness maker and member of the Geneva Board of Health. He says : " I was taken sick last October with gastris fever and my chance for recovery was con sidered almost hopeless. After 7 weeks the fever slowly left me, but I could not eat the simplest food without terrible distress. It seemed that I had recovered from the fever to Die of Starvation I took pepsin compounds, bismuth, charcoal, cod liver oil and malt until my physician confessed that his skill was about ex hausted and lie did not know what else to try. Everything I took seemed like ponr ing melted lead into my stomach. I hap pened to think I had part of a bottle of Hood's Sarsaparilla that had been in tlte house for two or three years, that I found had benefited me previously for dyspepsia. I began takirg it and soon began to feel better. I Imc no. taken a little over two bottles and can truth fully say I feel weJi again and can eat any thing without distressing mo, even to Pie and Cheese which I have been unable to touch for years. The English language does not contain words enough to permit me to express the praise I would like to give to Hood's Sarsaparilla." W. D. Wentz, 18 Castle St., Geneva, N. Y. A Good Voucher " I have known Mr. Warren D. Wentz for many years and can vouch for him as a man of veracity and one well known about here. J have sold him several bottles of Hood's Sarsaparilla during the past few months." M. H. Pabt bidge, Druggist, Geneva, N. Y. Hood's Pills cure Liver Ills JRA1 EIGH POST-Of FIOJ3 MAIL SGEDHULK.
