The argument in the matter of tax ing the Wilmington and Weldon rail road closed yesterday. The appeals from the 1st district in the Supreme Court, were disposed of yesterday. Robert Downing, the foremost American tragedian, who will come to the Metropolitan Hall next Tues. day in a grand scenic production of one of the strongest plays in the Eng lish language, the Gladiator, has been before the public as a star in the heroic drama for some half a dozen years, and during that time has never played a losing season. That is a re cord that few of even the successful and popular stars can boast. This year Mr. Downing has been doing better than ever before, and he has already a snug sum in bank as the profits of his tour. His big Chicago engagement swelled this amount to over $15,000 Mr! Downing is now reaping the reward of honest efforts ard Intelligent study, and the publio "rejoices with him in his prosperity, knowing that it is deserved. I. O. O. F.
